Danny Coale: Dallas Cowboys 5th-Round Pick Breaks Foot, Could Miss Part of Camp

Sigmund BloomJun 4, 2018

Misfortune struck the Dallas Cowboys' rookie class again, as they had a draft pick go down with an injury for the second time in less than a month on Tuesday.

Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com reports that fifth-round pick wide receiver Danny Coale suffered a broken bone in his foot and will be sidelined until at least the beginning of training camp.

According to Archer, Coale injured his foot near the end of the first OTA practice and limped off of the field. An MRI confirmed the break, and Coale is scheduled for surgery later this week.

Coale is in the running to be the team's third wide receiver. Laurent Robinson was a revelation in the role last year, which allowed him to land a big contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency. Kevin Ogletree, Coale's main competition for the job, should be able to get a leg up in the competition with Coale potentially missing part of training camp while he recovers from surgery.

Three other young wideouts should get more reps with Coale sidelined: Raymond Radway, a 2011 undrafted free agent who spent the season on injured reserve after breaking his leg in the final preseason game, Dwayne Harris, a 2011 sixth-round pick who was released and then re-signed during the season, and Andre Holmes, a 2011 undrafted free agent who was signed to the team's practice squad at the end of the year.

The Cowboys now have three of their first five picks out of action until training camp. First-round pick Morris Claiborne is recovering from wrist surgery and fourth-round pick Kyle Wilber suffered a broken finger earlier this month.

Third-round pick Tyrone Crawford missed practice Tuesday with a calf injury. Fourth-round pick Matt Johnson can't join the team until Eastern Washington's school year is over in mid-June.

Dallas fans shouldn't despair, as the Cowboys got big contributions from their rookie class last year without the benefit of an offseason due to the lockout.
