College Football 2012: Danny O'Brien Is Wisconsin's Latest QB Transfer Prize
Well, Wisconsin, we said on Tuesday that you live and die by the transfer rule, and today you live again.
It's been 24 hours since we instituted the Windbreaker Rule, which is to say that the first team's gear that a transfer player allows himself to be photographed in will end up being the team he transfers to.
We said that after seeing Danny O'Brien on the sidelines of Penn State's first spring practice, clad in a PSU windbreaker, likely telling new coach Bill O'Brien (no relation) things like, "Yes, I like what you're doing here with the throwing and touchdown scoring, I like those activities."
Well, apparently Danny O'Brien isn't much of a fan of the Windbreaker Rule, because according to reports, he's about to spurn Penn State and sign with Wisconsin. Here's the story from the Journal Sentinel:
Former quarterback Danny O’Brien is poised to transfer to Wisconsin, a college football source told the Journal Sentinel on Wednesday.
O’Brien is on pace to graduate this spring and under NCAA rules will be eligible to play immediately. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
UW has only two healthy quarterbacks participating in spring practice—Joe Brennan and Joel Stave.
Brennan isn't very good, and Stave is a walk-on. Wisconsin is trying to get Curt Phillips (two ACL tears in right knee) and Jon Budmayr (nerve issue/numbness in throwing arm) healthy for the season, but neither is a sure thing. In other words, yes, good Lord, did Wisconsin ever need this.
UPDATE, 1:05 PM: Wisconsin has made it official. Danny O'Brien is a Wisconsin Badger, and will be eligible immediately. He's not Russell Wilson, of course, but the Badger offense is still two pages long. Page 1: Hand it to Montee Ball. Page 2: You win!
