Tim Tebow Trade Rumors: Green Bay Packers Would Be Perfect Fit for Maligned QB
With Peyton Manning joining the Denver Broncos, it appears as though Tebowmania is coming to an end in the Rocky Mountain State. One unexpected locale that would seem to be a perfect fit for Tim Tebow, though, is the land of cheeseheads—Green Bay.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Packers are one of three teams, along with the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers, to watch in trade discussions for Tebow.
Tebow obviously wouldn't be a starter with the Packers as Aaron Rodgers is firmly entrenched, but the union makes a lot more sense than it might seem to at first consideration. With Matt Flynn signing with the Seattle Seahawks, the Packers are in desperate need of a backup to serve as an insurance policy to Rodgers.
Say what you will about Tebow, but he would seem to be an ideal backup.
Last season was his first in which he got extended playing time and he managed to the lead the Broncos to an AFC West title, a playoff berth and a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the postseason.
The Packers could certainly do a lot worse than that as far as backup signal-callers go. One would think that Tebow would prefer to go to a team where he has a chance to start, but it ultimately isn't his decision. There has been some talk that a fifth-round pick could be enough to land Tebow, and that would be a small price to pay for the Pack.
Of all the locations where Tebow could potentially end up, it stands to reason that Green Bay is the best.
When you think about it, if Tebow were to be traded almost anywhere else, it would whip the fanbase into a frenzy, put pressure on the incumbent quarterback and put pressure on Tebow himself.
None of that would happen if he went to the Packers, though. The Packers obviously have a very smart group of fans who would fully realize that Rodgers is the guy. Also, coming off a 2010 season in which he won the Super Bowl and a 2011 season in which he won the NFL MVP award, Rodgers is quite secure in his position.
While it wouldn't result in much playing time, this would be a great opportunity for Tebow.
If he were to be traded to a team like the Jaguars or the Miami Dolphins, he would be looked upon as a savior to a downtrodden franchise. That's an awful large burden to put on the shoulders of a quarterback who is still learning and completed just 45 percent of his passes last season.
In Green Bay he would have the opportunity to learn under the league's best quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. Tebow's contract jumps from just over $1 million to just over $6 million between next season and 2013, so the Packers will be able to hang onto him for a year for insurance, and then deal him once they find a more permanent solution.
Sitting and developing for another year could do a world of good for Tebow and he would likely be much better prepared to be a starter for whichever team trades for him.
Green Bay is far from a permanent destination for Tebow, but it would be beneficial for both sides.
