A feud with the current Intercontinental champion, Cody Rhodes, seems to have been silently creeping into the spotlight and looks to be a way the WWE can make several great choices.
With Sheamus now stepping in to be the man to compete against Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Championship at Mania, this puts a bit of a kink in the Daniel Bryan/AJ story line that had been going on with The Big Show.
Now the WWE will have to remove Show from the Daniel Bryan plot and insert Sheamus into a storyline with him to help build hype for the main event to come.
This won't be too difficult; several factors have already been established and key statements have been made that will be used to make this transition come across seamless.
Here's what we know:
Since before the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, The Big Show has been going on about how he needed to win that match to become champion once again. He desperately wanted to main event WrestleMania.
He remarked that he's had over 4,000 matches and fought pretty much everyone at this point, and held nearly every title, but he wants to be a champion on the WrestleMania stage.
A few of the superstars such as Cody Rhodes and Wade Barrett reminded Show that his WrestleMania record is not that great. Cody referred to him as the Anti-Undertaker, and the guy who has lost to the likes of Sumo Wrestlers and professional boxers on the grand stage; he's a WrestleMania joke, not a champion.
Show is loved by the fans, he's not expected to be a great chain wrestler or high flyer so what he does with his strength and girth is respected by the older, tougher fans of the WWE.
On top of that, he's a likable guy, can make jokes and be somewhat of a gentle giant when he needs to be, making him accessible to the kids. He's marketable to the entire audience.
Show has been in the WWE since 1999 and in that time, its true, he's held nearly every title. he's held titles 16 different times between the World Heavyweight, the WWE Championship, Tag Team championships and ECW Championship.
He's been the Hardcore Champion and United States Champion; however he has never been the Intercontinental champion.
In recent weeks, not only has Rhodes been mocking The Big Show but he was also the one who pinned him in The Elimination Chamber and pulled him out of the battle royal match on last week's Smackdown. The Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes has become a thorn in the Big Show's side.
Cody Rhodes seems to be more concerned with going after the World Heavyweight Championship than he does with defending his Intercontinental championship.
Watch for The Big Show to be more consumed with anger for Cody Rhodes in the coming weeks than he is with Daniel Bryan. This will draw Show away from the Daniel Bryan storyline and allow Sheamus to move into one.
This will lead to a challenge issued to Rhodes for the IC title at Mania, Show will goad him into the match, bringing up the fact that what does Rhodes have to fear if Show seems to never win at WrestleMania.
Cody will accept and retort that he'll just be another name on the list of many whom have beaten the Big Show at the event.
Doing this not only gets Show a good feud going into the pay per view, but if he were to win, he would be one of the few men ever to hold every major title in not just the WWE, but in all of professional wrestling.
If the match took place early on the card, maybe even the opening bout, the WWE could have it be somewhat of a quick match, giving Big Show an easy decisive win over his bully, while leaving Rhodes not too beat for the night.
With Rhodes taken out quick, maybe from a choke slam rather than a knockout punch, he could easily come back later in the night to compete in the Money in the Bank ladder match.
Rumors are that the Money in the Bank match will return to WrestleMania and Cody being someone who seems to want to go after that World Title would be a perfect contender for the match.
On top of that, having him win and be Mr. Money in the Bank for the next year would be great for Rhodes' character as well.
Its a positive, easy path. Big Show gets not only a WrestleMania win but becomes the only guy to hold every title, making the title that much more precious. You get Big Show as a defending champion to help the belt and bring it to the place it should be.
While Rhodes loses the title, he can show that he's strong enough to compete twice at WrestleMania, once against a giant and the other time in one of the most physically demanding matches in the business.
