NBA Trade Rumors: Overrated Dwight Howard Not Worth Mortgaging Future for
Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard is the best center in the NBA, but he is overrated because of his postseason failures and the lack of a strong post game.
Wow, Dwight Howard overrated? Yes, the Magic star is not as good as people think, which is why it would be incredibly foolish for a team like the Chicago Bulls to destroy their depth and future by acquiring Howard via trade.
"The Bulls, I'm told, are stunned (and somewhat miffed) that Howard doesn't have them on his wish list, struggling to believe he's not angling to hook up with D-Rose in a true (if frigid) NBA metropolis. And interesting won't begin to describe the situation if these teams do start talking seriously, with Orlando sure to want Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson and Chicago more likely to try to sell the Magic on the likes of Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer and Omer Asik.
"
The Bulls should not even think about including Noah, Deng or Gibson in any trade for Howard. Chicago isn't going to upgrade their team that much, if at all, by acquiring Howard and in turn would be parting with some really good young talent and draft picks.
One reason the Bulls are so good and will remain an NBA Finals contender for many years is because their bench is so deep and talented. They have guys on the bench who can rebound, score and play defense, all of which are immensely important to the team's success each night.
Howard is overrated because although his defense is absolutely fantastic, his offense is weak. His stats are good in terms of point per game, but he's benefiting hugely because he is so strong and much more athletic than his peers.
As he gets older and he's not much more athletic than his fellow centers, he will have to rely on his post game to help him, but right now his low-post skills are terrible.
Howard lacks the fundamental big man moves like the skyhook, jump hook, turnaround jumper and mid-range jumper. You can't just bully your way to the basket and use your strength to score. This is the NBA, that doesn't work in the pros like it does in college or high school.
Unless Howard is able to find some post moves that he can be effective with on a consistent basis, he will not be a complete offensive player. Most of his offense at this stage if Howard's career is created from lobs and dunks. He must improve his offensive repertoire if he's to be considered an elite player.
Howard is a very good player, don't get me wrong, but he isn't good enough to give up multiple young players and draft picks to acquire, especially when you already have a team capable of winning the NBA Finals like the Chicago Bulls.
