Kenyon Martin to L.A. Clippers: Lob City Wise to Bring in Former High Flyer

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Kenyon Martin's long, strange journey back to the NBA has ended with the power forward signing a contract to play for the Los Angeles Clippers, according to Mike James of the Los Angeles Times

Details of the contract are not yet known, but it is described as a "mini-midlevel deal that will be finalized as soon as Martin passes a physical."

The Clippers are playing well right now, leading the Pacific division with a 13-7 record, but their roster is so thin that any help they can get will make a huge difference.

What It Means?

At 34 years old, Martin is not the dynamic offensive player that he once was. He averaged a career-low 8.6 points per game with Denver last season, and only played in 48 games due to a knee injury.

The Clippers are in a good spot right now because they don't need a lot of help on offense. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin give them all the star power that they need to compete in the Western Conference.

The one area that the team is seriously lacking in is depth. They emptied out their roster just to acquire Paul from New Orleans. It is so hard to rely on just two or three players in the regular season, and hope to keep them fresh if you make the postseason.

Martin gives the Clippers a quality body off the bench. He is also capable of starting on days when Griffin needs to rest.

What Happens Next

Martin still has to pass his physical in order for the deal to be made official. Assuming that happens, then he can start practicing with the team and getting into game shape.

There is no mention in the report about when he would start playing.

While the Clippers wait for the results on Martin's physical, they begin a six-game road trip on Saturday in Washington
