NHL Jerseys and Nostalgia: Six Teams Who Should Bring Back a Retro Jersey

Bobby KittlebergerJun 2, 2018

The NHL is unique in the creativity and variety of every team's jersey. Teams often change their look and upgrade their style, ushering in either a new sleeker design or giving a nod to the past with a throw-back design derived from an old uniform and incorporated with the new Reebok Edge system.

Many teams in the league already have throw-back jerseys representing different times in each team's history. However, not every jersey or even every team has been able to create such a jersey. Some teams are simply too young and don't have enough history to develop a "retro" uniform.

A few teams still have room for more jerseys in the dressing room, and this is a list meant to address each of those jerseys specifically. Here are six teams with retro jerseys that would fit nicely into the NHL.

St. Louis Blues: 1995-1997

Not only was this a sleek jersey, but it was also worn during some of the Blues' best years by players such as Brett Hull, Al Macinnis and even Wayne Gretzky. The trumpet shoulder patch was a nice touch—A Reebok Edge jersey with this style could be a great look.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim: 1993-2006

Like it or not, this jersey had a lot of staying power. Though the team bounced between several third jerseys during this 13-year stretch, nothing ever truly replaced these uniforms until the Mighty Ducks came under new ownership and changed their named to just the "Ducks." The new uniforms of the Anaheim Ducks are a sharp, more sophisticated design than this one.

Bringing back this jersey would be a fun idea and could work well if combined with a sleeker black and orange look of Anaheim's current uniforms.

Washington Capitals: 1997-2007

Having the capitol building on the jersey of any team from DC is fantastic, and the Capitals made it happen for about a decade.

Their new look is a throw-back in and of itself and is without a doubt one of the most attractive and well thought-out designs in the NHL today. Nonetheless, the old 1997 design can hold its own, and bringing it back as a third jersey with the current team's colors would be a nice complement to the current look.

Phoenix Coyotes: 1998-2003

The Coyotes' original uniforms had a unique southwestern Arizona look with an artistic desert pattern. The newly-designed Phoenix is a completely different direction for the team's past look, with a very different logo and color scheme.

Odds of the Coyotes bringing back this jersey are slim, though their new third jersey is very close to the old color scheme. Adding the retro logo and pattern would fit in nicely with the new colors.

Vancouver Canucks: 1989-1997

The Canucks' current jersey is more "retro" than this one would be. Though we're well into the second decade of separating this look from the current one, for many, this is what would be considered the Canucks' classic look.

The color scheme was a dramatic departure from the original design and would be unsuited to the team's current colors. If the logo was used again, it wouldn't be the first time the Canucks have done so, as they brought back the original hockey stick logo for their third jersey in 2006.

Winnipeg Jets: 1990-1996

6 of 6

We wouldn't be able to have this list without the Winnipeg Jets' jersey of the 1990s. The Jets' iconic logo and the simplistic blue and red color scheme make this one of the most treasured uniforms in hockey history.

It's somewhat surprising that the new Winnipeg Jets franchise didn't revive this look in some way. However, that doesn't mean the organization won't develop a retro design and incorporate it as a third jersey in the future.

Their current jerseys are a terrific upgrade and a testimony to the new beginning of the franchise. Even still, having the pleasant familiarity of the Jets' 1990 jersey would be a breath of fresh air to the hockey community.
