2011 Alamo Bowl: Did Baylor's Robert Griffin III Play His Last College Game?

Jim SullivanDec 29, 2011

In what was certainly the most thrilling Alamo Bowl ever and quite possibly one of the greatest postseason games in the history of the sport, Robert Griffin III and the Baylor Bears pulled off a stunning 67-56 victory over the Washington Huskies.

After winning the Heisman, Griffin III has had a huge dilemma on his hands. As only a redshirt junior, he has the opportunity to stay one more year if he desires to, but the allure of millions of dollars from the NFL is a strong motivator. So basically there is only one question on everyone's minds: Will he go pro?

The answer is still very much up in the air. After a huge bowl win over Washington in Baylor's first postseason victory since 1992, you may be thinking that Griffin III will be leaning towards leaving.

After all, he just won what could be the last college game of his career in one of the most exciting clashes ever. He owns the Heisman, has a degree from Baylor University and has all the talent and potential to make millions in the NFL. Why shouldn't he leave on this high note?

Here's why: What about Baylor? Griffin and his teammates have been saying all season that it's all about Baylor and its success as a university. If he leaves now, he'll encompass the exact attitude of every other college superstar who left for the pros a year early that he doesn't want to emulate.

Greed, power, and ultimate success are strong motivators, but so are loyalty, camaraderie, and self-worth. If he gives up the college life up, it goes against all the morals and behaviors not only his university teaches, but also that football teaches in itself. It's not about the money; it's about the love for the game.

He and his team posted a strong 10-3 record with losses to Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Kansas State. Next year, they have the chance to do much more with him at the wheel, but that would require him not leaving Waco.

There is no doubt anymore that Griffin III is one of the best who has ever played college ball, but will he do it for one more season? Perhaps be only the second player to win the Heisman twice? Take home Baylor's first Big 12 Championship? Win a BCS bowl? Go down as a legend in Texas football?

Or will he throw all that away for money? The choice is his, but he knows exactly which is the right one to pick.
