WWE News: Raw Main Event Is Lowest-Rated Overrun All Year

Justin WatryDec 22, 2011

WWE Raw was a pretty good show. I enjoyed most of it.

My only problem was I knew from the beginning this show was going to bomb in the ratings. As most know, this week's Raw got a 2.9 rating.

I get the same feeling whenever I turn on Spike TV on Thursdays every couple weeks. I feel the same with a taped show for Raw.

You just can tell how interesting the program is about an hour into the show.

According to this report, the segment-by-segment numbers are now in. The excuses are likely to come flying in shortly, but they tell a very telling story. It is not shocking to me, but others may think so.

Here are the breakdowns.

The Show Began with a 3.36 Rating

This was expected. It was coming off a nice WWE TLC PPV, and the show always opens up with a nice number.

Viewers want to see the fallout, so they watch the opening. Nothing to examine here.

Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett Lost 721,000 Viewers

Not many people care to see these two yet again. They fought at Tuesday's special. They had a match the week before, and the Tables match was also on the PPV the night before.

It had no interest. Moving on!

Beth Phoenix vs. Alicia Fox Gained 277,000 Viewers

Alicia Fox is a star.

Say what you want about her, but I am a huge fan. If she ever cleaned up her work inside the ring, she would be on the fast track to superstardom.

Clearly, viewers wanted to see something in this segment. Big win for the Foxy Fans!

Sheamus vs. Jinder Mahal Lost 247,000 Viewers

Again, there just was nothing here for viewers.

Why watch this? We saw it on SmackDown, and there is not even a doubt who would win. Just more filler.

Surprisingly, the entire first hour consisted of male SmackDown wrestlers (not counting the women).

John Cena's Promo with Mark Henry and Kane Gained 428,000 Viewers

No surprise. Cena will always equal big numbers.

Mark Henry and Kane are two very interesting figures right now in WWE. I just wish Henry was off WWE TV to heal. Safety comes first.

Anyway, the focus was on Kane and Cena, in which fans are seemingly interested in.

Epico and Primo vs. The Usos and Cody Rhodes vs. Santino Lost 719,000 Viewers

Yet again, there was no interest here. No proper introduction of Primo and Epico.

Rosa was just dancing around in the ring. The crowd couldn't care less right now. Cody beating Santino in one minute was the same story.

Why bother? It happened. Fans did not care to see it.

Backstage Segments with Johnny Ace, the Bellas and Others Lost 56,000 Viewers

It was filler before the main event. Backstage segments can't be too interesting.

If something big was going to happen, it usually takes place in the middle of the ring. No surprise here!

The Main Event Gained Only 59,000 Viewers

According to the report, the main event drew a 2.67 rating and may be the lowest overrun of the year. I am a fan of all three champs, but they are not off to a good start in this new "revolution."

Justify it all you want, but the "Internet favorites" are not exactly proving their critics wrong right now.

For an overrun to only gain that many viewers is just scary. As the report states, that number is nearly impossible, because viewers are tuning in for the next show on USA.

Well, I guess that many people turned the main event off then, so the gain from new viewers did not offset the overrun.

Any way you want to slice it, Raw had a very disappointing number. That main event is going to be looked at from every direction.

The fact remains Daniel Bryan, CM Punk and Zack Ryder were the focus all night, and they failed to deliver. Use any excuses you want, but numbers do not lie.
