Chicago Bulls: Re-Signing Brian Scalabrine a Waste of Time
As top teams like the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks are gearing up for another title run, the Chicago Bulls have done nothing as the re-signing of perennial bench-warmer Brian Scalabrine perfectly demonstrating this disappointing circumstance.
Scalabrine, a 33-year-old backup power forward who makes a living cheering off the bench, got out of the remainder of his Benetton Treviso contract by paying back the team all that he made.
Scalabrine should not have been brought back to the Chicago Bulls, even if they gave him a non-guaranteed contract. He played just 86 minutes last year while missing the final 33 games of the season, which includes the entire playoffs.
He scored 20 points while having five turnovers and 18 fouls whenever he graced the floor to the enthusiastic applause to his "White Mamba" supporters.
The Heat have added center Eddy Curry and small forward Shane Battier to become more defensively tough. The Mavericks answered losing center Tyson Chandler to the New York Knicks by trading for Lamar Odom.
The 39-year-old Thomas could play both power forward and center while effectively starting 37 games for the oft injured Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah. Now, the Bulls are trying to fill their fifth frontcourt roster spot with an effective backup, and Scalabrine obviously doesn't fit the bill.
A better signing for the Bulls instead of wasting a roster spot again on Scalabrine is to sign a free-agent backup center like Joel Przybilla.
Przybilla is a 31-year-old big who used to start for the Trail Blazers and can still play at a decent level. He balled in 36 games last year while averaging over 14 minutes per game. He is 7'1", 245 pounds of brute force that will replace Thomas' post presence.
While fans are happy that their "White Mamba" could continue being a cheery leprechaun on the bench, the Bulls would benefit more from a fifth frontcourt player like Przybilla who could actually contribute to his team's success on the floor.
