WWE News: Why Kane's Masked Return Was Less About Fans and More About WWE

This past Monday Night Raw Kane made his triumphant return to WWE television.

During his absence, many fans were clambering to see him come back behind the mask. Personally, I don't see a point to have Kane back with long hair and a mask. Simply put, that gimmick has been long gone and no longer makes sense.

When Kane debuted in the 90's he had a mask on to "hide" terrible scars from a fire. We are going on almost 10 years with no mask and have seen Kane be the gentle giant and a monster. To me, they could have simply brought back the monster and had him plow through both Henry and Cena.

He easily could have just worn that initial metal mask to the ring prior to give him a menacing look without the "Kane mask" underneath.

Now it turns out that the WWE may have brought back the mask for selfish reasons and not for the fans.

Wrestlinginc.com reported:

One reason for Kane resurfacing with a mask is because WWE officials are looking to set a new Guinness World Record for the "largest gathering of people wearing costume masks" at WrestleMania XXVIII in Miami, Florida. The current record was set May 10, 2011 during a Major League Baseball game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Chicago White Sox at Angel Stadium of Anaheim when roughly 25,000 fans donned red Lucha masks during a designated ten minute time period.

Another reason for the masked return is because WWE wants to be able to sell masks, especially during the holiday season. With Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio currently sidelined, that leaves only Kane as a guy who can sell masks.

I heard a rumor a few weeks back about the WWE wanting to do this with Sin Cara, but due to his injury they scrapped the idea. Now they may actually be able to reignite it. The question is will they give out these masks for the world record or make fans purchase them?

If this was also about moving merchandise, one has to wonder, is Kane over enough with all of the fans for them to purchase Kane masks? I can't imagine kids buying a Kane mask over a Cena t-shirt and not many adults are going to purchase the new Kane mask. So for selling reasons it doesn't make sense.

Ultimately, we still have several months left to see if the WWE is pushing to do this world record thing. I feel Kane would have to play a significant roll at WrestleMania in order for it to make sense. So to me, he either has to be a part of the World title picture or be the Undertaker's opponent.

Let me know your thoughts: Are you happy about the masked Kane's return, or was this a poor attempt by the WWE?
