Brock Lesnar and the 10 Most Overhyped Fighters in the UFC

G DDec 7, 2011

Like any sport, making it to the highest level requires exceptional skill, hard work, intelligence and a focused mindset.

In the sport of mixed martial arts, those fighting in the UFC demonstrate all the requirements, allowing them to fight at the highest stage in the world.

However, while much credit is certainly due for their accomplishments, sometimes the credit is a bit too much.

For some reason or another, specific fighters receive an overwhelming attention, which may not necessarily be deserved.

So, the following slides display the 10 most overhyped fighters in the UFC today.

Let's take a look.

Alistair Overeem

1 of 10

Alistair Overeem will make his UFC debut on December 10th to take on Brock Lesnar in one of the most hyped events in UFC history.

Despite the hype, Overeem has yet to even step foot inside the Octagon or fight at the highest stage of mixed martial arts.

While Overeem is certainly a serious threat to any heavyweight opponent, the press he is receiving is beyond the norm.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller

2 of 10

After being off for more than a year, Jason "Mayhem" Miller took the Octagon to take on Michael Bisping at the Ultimate Fighter Season 14 Finale.

In a one-sided affair, Miller was beat to shreds before the fight was finally stopped in the third round.

Miller's career is filled with hype despite hardly any prized wins.

Jon Jones

3 of 10

Time and time again, Jon "Bones" Jones has proven himself to be one of the best 205-pound fighters in the world.

Jones' world-class skills and reach advantage have allowed him to become the youngest champion in UFC history.

But, Jones may be receiving too much hype, as he still has much to prove.

Bones has defeated an injured Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and a Quinton "Rampage" Jackson who hasn't knocked out an opponent since 2008.

Tito Ortiz

4 of 10

Somehow, someway, Tito Ortiz remains one of the most overhyped fighters in the UFC today.

As we know, at one point in his career, the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" was considered to be nearly unstoppable as a former light heavyweight champion.

But, the tides have recently turned, as Ortiz's career took a southward dip and he's won just one fight in his last seven appearances.

Over-hyped Tito is alive and well.

Brock Lesnar

5 of 10

Brock Lesnar entered the Octagon for the very first time with arguably more hype than any other fighter in the history of the UFC.

A major reason for this excessive hype was due to Lesnar's previous career in the WWE, where we was considered the organization's icon.

Lesnar has been successful up until this point in his career, as he is a former heavyweight champion.

However, the hype Lesnar is receiving is far beyond what he deserves.

Yoshihiro Akiyama

6 of 10

Yoshihiro Akiyama may get one of the rawest deals in all of mixed martial arts, as it appears he can never come across an easy opponent.

However, for the amount of hype Akiyama has received over the years, he'll eventually need to perform at the elite stage which has been granted to him.

Akiyama has yet to display a significant win in his UFC career.

Vitor Belfort

7 of 10

Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort is one of the most recognized names in the UFC.

A major reason for this is the dominance and skill Belfort's displayed throughout his days with Pride and previous stint with the UFC.

But, since rejoining the UFC, Belfort's demonstrated just one legitimate win, with a win over Rich Franklin at UFC 103.

Belfort is one of the most overhyped fighters in mixed martial arts today.

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto

8 of 10

"Kid" Yamamoto began his mixed martial arts career with an impressive 17-1 (1) record.

Along with Yamamoto's clear dominance came an undeserved amount of hype, as Kid has lost four of his last five bouts.

Still, Yamamoto still receives an unwarranted amount of hype and squares off with opponents he can't compete with.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

9 of 10

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is another example of a fighter who picked apart his opponents throughout his Pride career but failed to carry over the success into the UFC.

While Nogueira has captured two victories over Luiz Cane and Jason Brilz, he fell short when legitimate competition was at hand against Ryan Bader and Phil Davis.

Nogueira's success up until this point in the UFC is far too over-hyped.

Jake Shields

10 of 10

Leading up to his bout with Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129, Jake Shields was one of the most hyped fighters in the UFC.

Shields would not only lose his title fight but would get knocked out just 53 seconds into his next fight by Jake Ellenberger.

However, Shields continues to receive unworthy praise.
