Wofford vs. Northern Iowa Video: Watch the Biggest Boneheaded Play of the Year
There are stupid mistakes in college football, then there’s what happened in Saturday’s Wofford-Northern Iowa game in the FCS championship's second round.
Tyler Sievertsen of Northern Iowa sent a kickoff to Wofford’s Stephon Shelton to the back part of the end zone. Shelton caught the ball and inexplicably didn’t call a fair catch or take off running out of the end zone. He just causally began walking around as if he did take a knee, but the Northern Iowa defense knew better.
They swarmed Shelton and Zach Cutkomp punches the ball out of his hand and Phil Wright pounces on the ball like there was a scrum. Touchdown Northern Iowa.
What really adds injury to insult in this bone-headed move is that it ended up being the difference in the game. Northern Iowa won 28-21…ouch!
You can attempt to justify Shelton’s decision in a variety of ways, but each argument ends with “but yeah it was incredibly dumb”.
He clearly just forgot to take a knee which is incredibly stupid because he only had two options.
My favorite part of the video is how Wright acted like he was in the middle of some sort of huge pile that required him to dive on the ball. He must have been incredibly confused to be given a gift like that. Maybe that was Shelton’s way of giving a Christmas present to Northern Iowa.
Something tells me all of his teammates that are now eliminated from the postseason didn’t exactly approve of the gift…but I’m sure he’ll be getting a yearly Christmas card from Wright and the rest of Northern Iowa.
They were just given the greatest Christmas present ever.
