Heisman Watch: Why LSU's Honey Badger Should Be a Heisman Finalist

Dan VastaDec 4, 2011

More times than not four players get selected to New York for the Heisman ceremony, but there has to be five players selected this season and Tyrann Mathieu better be one of the five.

He already has 11 career forced fumbles which is tied for the most in the storied history of the SEC. Don't forget the Honey Badger is just in his second season!

However, this is not a career achievement and it is all about having the most outstanding players in the country participating in the Heisman ceremony. He has only played two seasons, so there is not much career achievement involvement here.

Robert Griffin III, Trent Richardson, Andrew Luck and Montee Ball are all worthy, but the Honey Badgers has been electric for the undisputed top ranked team in the country.

LSU does not have an offensive star because if they had one he would be atop the Heisman right now. Instead, the most important, impacted non-offensive player in several years deserves a spot in New York.

Is that asking too much?

He does not have to win the Heisman because I could have some issues with that since he was suspended a game for violating team rules (drug policy). And due to the fact that RGIII may be much more deserving.

I am not making a case for Mathieu winning it, but he proved on the national spotlight that he clearly plays his best ball when it matters the most.

His electric and Heisman invitee moment was against the Georgia Bulldogs when he nearly brought back two kicks.

The first punt return touchdown was sensational, but the second return was nearly unimaginable. He nearly conquered the unthinkable dodging a dozen tackles where he was finally tripped on the shoelaces deep into Georgia territory

He has wreaked havoc not only on special teams, but on defense as arguably the best defensive back not named Morris Claiborne.

He has forced 11 fumbles the past two seasons, but also has two touchdowns via non-punt returns because after all, the Honey Badger is the freak of all freaks these days.

Hopefully he never becomes bigger than the game because he truly is a spectacle to watch and most around him understand how vital he is to the team.

People call him the Honey Badger which no doubt is the perfect name, but he is like the Energy Bunny that keeps on going.

Just looking at his near second touchdown return, he never died. He kept dodging tacklers and made Georgia look like a high school squad at times when he was bringing back those two highlight reel punts.

There is no reason why the top ranked team in the country cannot get one player into Heisman consideration because I believe that without Tyrann Mathieu that LSU would not be as dominant.

Maybe they would still be 13-0, but I only want the four or five most outstanding players in the country and the Honey Badgers garners the attention.

There are a certain amount of players that light up the atmosphere where everybody stands on their feet holding their breath.

Mathieu is the king in that category and his All-American status is only growing by the day. Along with Mo Claiborne he has made people forget about Patrick Peterson and Mathieu could make the case that is worthy of belonging in the Heisman case just for his defensive prowess.

His special ability to bring back punts only makes the case more legit and if this super sophomore gets invited to New York, he could end up becoming the most accomplished when it is all said and done.
