WWE SmackDown Should Stay on Friday Nights for Now
I loved Tuesday night's live special SmackDown. It was a different atmosphere, and it definitely had more buzz than a usual taped Friday show.
However, I really do not see the need to make the permanent move just yet. There are a few reasons why the time/night change just does not appeal to me right now.
1. It takes time to make a big move. Just up and doing something as big as changing nights (possibly times) for WWE SmackDown should not happen overnight.
I really do not feel a "demand" so big is in order right now. On Dec. 1, 2011, I like SmackDown in its current form. In fact, I love it!
Mark Henry is the best man on WWE TV. Cody Rhodes is slowly becoming a main event level talent. Randy Orton is having an amazing year, while Wade Barrett is making some noise again in the wrestling landscape. No need to doing anything major that might disrupt that...
2. The wrestling week is now over. I don't think many watch WWE NXT or WWE Superstars online. I watch ROH when I can but certainly not on Saturday night. Do not even get me started on DixieLand!
For all intents and purposes, the wrestling week is over. There is no new episode of SmackDown on Friday. If you want to catch the replay, go ahead! However, everyone already saw the show Tuesday.
3. Ratings did not increase. The popular assumption is moving WWE SmackDown to Tuesday night will increase the viewership. That is not the case, no matter how many times people try to make that case.
This past Tuesday night's live SmackDown scored a 2.0 rating. For those wondering, the Friday night taped show days prior scored a 1.9 rating.
However, WWE SmackDown received a 2.31 rating just two months ago for one of their taped Friday night shows. Since then, they have been at or just above that 2.0 level.
In other words, ratings are not a legitimate reason to change nights. The results are not there to justify the move. They just aren't. They are the same numbers taped Friday nights, as a live Tuesday night.
As you can see, there really is no need to move SmackDown to Tuesday nights right now. Viewership did not change. Scheduling will not change, and going the rest of the week with no WWE on TV is not very fun.
In conclusion, would I welcome live Tuesday SmackDown shows? Of course! I would if it all made sense. However, there is certainly no rush to do it now, and it may not be as easy a decision as some may think.
Remember the old saying: be careful what you wish because you just might get it...
