Floyd Mayweather: Could His Legal Issues Get in the Way of Super Fight?

Nedu ObiNov 29, 2011

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao could be vying for the bragging rights of pound-for-pound king sometime in the not too distant future—May 5 is looking good. The question is: Could Mayweather’s well-documented legal issues get in the way of their proposed super fight?

The answer to that question is no.

For several years now Mayweather has been accused of a myriad of offenses ranging from verbal intimidation to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Let’s take a look at some of his alleged misdemeanours.

Aaron Ryan and Miguel Burgos Lawsuit

1 of 5

In October of 2010, Mayweather was accused of both verbally and physically threatening two security guards who were stationed in the vicinity of his housing complex.

Still, he was acquitted of any wrong doing after it was ruled that the credibility of the armed plaintiffs were brought into question—the suggestion that they feared for their lives.

Quincey Williams and Damien Bland Lawsuit

2 of 5

Mayweather was sued by both Quincey Williams and Damien Bland (a childhood friend) for allegedly orchestrating the shooting up of their car at a Las Vegas skating rink, sometime back in 2009.

Be that as it may, Mayweather was never charged with the crime and Ocie Harris, a former associate of Money was indicted for said offenses.

Anthony Dash Lawsuit

3 of 5

Not only is Mayweather being sued by music producer Anthony Dash, but so is his production company and the WWE.

The lawsuits stem from Mayweather’s alleged copyright infringement surrounding his entrance song at the 2008 WrestleMania event.

Apropos the case, Mayweather was ordered to do 40 hours of community service for failing to appear at a prior hearing on the pretence of being incapacitated.

He, however, has to perform the community service for the Las Vegas Habitat for Humanity Project by the end of January 2012, or face further consequences—though I doubt Mayweather is asinine enough to let that transpire.

Nevertheless, Dash’s case against Mayweather is still pending.

Manny Pacquiao Lawsuit

The Pac-Man himself isn’t above suing as he did so against his pound-for-pound rival for defamation of character—Mayweather allegedly stated that Pac-Man had been using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) throughout his career.

Mayweather has vehemently denied that accusation.

Now, with recent news of their proposed super fight going viral, the likelihood of this case coming to fruition is slim at best.

Josie Harris’s Criminal Charges

5 of 5

In this instance, Money has been accused of domestic violence against his ex Josie Harris, who also happens to be the mother of his three progeny.

The charges were brought by Harris in late 2010.

The reasons behind the alleged assault were due to Harris supposedly having an affair with Chicago Bulls basket player C.J. Watson.

Mayweather has denied all charges and had this to say about the alleged accusations,

"

“There's a difference," Mayweather said, "between restraining somebody and holding somebody, saying, 'Relax, you're under the influence. ...'”

“Everything is just common sense," Mayweather said. "It's like, as far as the Josie Harris situation, she said she got -- if I'm not mistaken -- she said she got punched, stomped and beaten, but we've yet to see photos.”

“It's no different than, like, everybody knows where the highest child support, the most money for child support, is at -- California. So where do you think she lives at? Where do you think she lives now? California. So when we're getting along, and we're on good terms, she's living in Vegas. If she don't get what she wants, she says, 'OK, I'm going to California, and if I can't get what I want, basically, the system will make you give me what I want.”

"

A preliminary hearing for the case is expected to take place on December 21, 2011.

Nonetheless, Mayweather now faces four counts each of felony and misdemeanour charges, of which if found guilty on either count would culminate in a mandatory prison sentence.

That being said, even though there might be a possible custodial sentence looming, it’s safe to say that there’s also the possibility that Mayweather will be acquitted of all charges.

The reasons being the said allegations could turn out to be false and even if they were true, I’m sure some sort of monetary incentive will be arranged.

There’s too much riding on this fight (Bob Arum, Pacquiao, Las Vegas, NV and of course Money himself), financially that is, for anything to get in its way.

Money’s legal issues will be dealt with in the best possible way, such as to ensure his proposed bout with Pacquiao goes ahead as planned.

It’s not personal, it’s just business.
