Laurie Fine's Comments to Alleged Victim Displays Delusional Thinking of Bernie

Richard LangfordNov 28, 2011

Bernie Fine lives in a reality of his own creation. At least if comments from his wife that recently became public hold any truth.

ESPN released a phone conversation between Bernie's wife, Laurie Fine, and one of the alleged victims of the former assistant men's basketball coach at Syracuse.

Here is an excerpt of comments made by Laurie Fine over the phone to the alleged victim. The video, as it appeared on ESPN, is posted below.

"

Bernie is also in denial. I think that he did the things he did, but he's somehow, through his own mental telepathy, has erased them out of his mind.

I think, he thinks he's above the law.

"

Delusional Thinking

Fine's wife paints a clear picture of a person with delusional thinking.

First of all, she indicates that her husband had erased these things from his mind.

And if that wasn't delusional enough, she indicates that her husband carried the sense that he was above the law.

Conclusions

If Laurie's assessment of her husband's mental state is even close to true, it certainly sheds some light not just on Bernie himself, but of the climate he was in. In Laurie's description, Bernie was compartmentalizing his alleged atrocities. This would allow him to function without being paralyzed by guilt.

The comment stating Fine felt he was above the law certainly indicates a man that has a misguided view of his place in life. The comments portray a man so wrapped up in himself that he can rationalize child molestation.

This purported state of Fine's mind also paints a picture of a society that places too much emphasis on sports.

It is reasonable to assume that, over the years, Fine had instances in reality to reinforce his delusion that he was above the law. It would suggest that many of the people he encountered revered Syracuse basketball enough to blindly put Fine on a pedestal.

And if any of these last paragraphs hold a semblance of truth than these conditions fueled the fever of Fine's sickness that arose from a disproportionate view of the value of his life. And that would make it increasingly easier for Fine to self-justify any acts of depravity.

Fine was simply an assistant coach in a college basketball program, and in many facets of his life, this likely led to him being treated like royalty.

As evidence continues to mount, it certainly appears that is treatment he did not deserve.
