Why Stevie Johnson Doesn't Have the Skill to Back Up His TD Dance Antics

John HickeyNov 27, 2011

Buffalo wide receiver Stevie Johnson put on one of the more classless touchdown celebrations in recent history Sunday in MetLife Stadium.

He appeared to throw the gauntlet at both Jets wide receivers, Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes, with his display. Johnson mimed shooting himself in the leg, then did a facsimile of an airplane crash.

It was a Thanksgiving weekend in 2008 when Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub. He later spent two years in prison on weapons charges.

And it was a year ago April that authorities at Pittsburgh International Airport filed a report on Holmes’ failure to turn off his iPod on takeoff from the airport. Holmes wasn’t arrested, though, and no charges were filed.

If Burress and Holmes wanted to mock back, they could just drop passes or take themselves out of the offense, because Johnson, despite the touchdown that put the Bills up 14-7 at the time Sunday, isn’t having anything close to the year he had in 2011.

In 13 starts last year (16 games total), he caught 82 passes good for 1,073 yards and 10 scores. But he came into Sunday with nine starts (10 games total) with only 46 catches and four TDs.

Did Burress do something stupid, then wind up having years taken out of his career because of that?

That can’t be argued.

Did Holmes' airplane issues invite mocking? To be sure.

Was Johnson feeling good after his fifth catch of the half? No doubt.

Even so, Johnson has had one good year out of his four in the NFL. He'd be advised to hone his touchdown catching skills more than his TD dance moves.

After all, there’s an old adage about glass houses that Johnson would be wise to consider.
