Manny Pacquiao: 7 Reasons He Should Retire After Beating Juan Manuel Marquez

Justin TateNov 19, 2011

Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO) is nearing the end of his career. He plans to run for an executive position in his country within two years that will completely cut-off his boxing career.

He's getting endorsements and he's opening shops. Why box any longer? Maybe Mayweather?

Floyd Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO) is lucrative, but is he worth it?  More money is cool, but he'll get it regardless if he plays his financial cards right.

Here are seven reasons retirement is an appealing decision for Pacquiao to make right now.

7. His Family

1 of 7

Pacquiao would have more time to devote to raising his young children. He has four to be exact. That's a lot in these busier more Internet-driven times where time far outweighs money in its importance more so than ever before in our Earth's history.

6. His Health

2 of 7

Pacquiao has been getting beaten for a very long time. Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KO) is the last man to beat him, but he's not the last man to do damage to the young Filipino.

Cotto, Clottey, Margarito all caused some facial damage to Pacquiao in their bouts. In the aftermath of Pacquiao-Marquez III, Marquez's face looked worse but Pacquiao's face wasn't exactly at its prettiest.

A 25-year-old Pacquiao could take a beating and be ready to live life normally the next day. A 32 going on 33-year-old Pacquiao might retain some of this prolonged damage and might not shake off the long-term effects so easily.

5. His Election

Pacquiao has dreams the size of skyscrapers in politics. Heaven can't hold his ambition and apparently reality agrees because he's been elected to congress.

What political dream will come into fruition next? By 2013, Pacquiao could win another election to an even higher political position that requires even more of his time.

Rather than be bogged down in fights, Pacquiao could travel the world collecting campaign money and support from the world's biggest celebrity, political and financial figures. Beats getting beat in the ring.

4. His Nemesis

4 of 7

Floyd Mayweather is an unavoidable subject. Pacquiao likely hates being compared to someone he likely doesn't feel he should be compared to, but they are the two best fighters of their generation.

Pacquiao has done a lot. Mayweather as done just as much if not more. Beating Mayweather is the only way to quench the thirst of the public and hush the Mayweather noise.

But maybe dealing with Mayweather annoys Pacquiao's spirit and stabs his pride too sharply to allow Mayweather to get everything he wants.

When Mayweather doesn't concede to more of what Pacquiao wants (no matter the item), Team Pacquiao will give up.

The confusion over who wants who and how did this become a such a big issue is hard to tear through. If the negotiations go bad in the media and Pacquiao blames Mayweather, he'll get away with no blame.

Mayweather's the bad guy so blaming him for everything taking so long or not happening at all are always good fallback plans for Pacquiao thanks to the controversial things he says.

Pacquiao could avoid the Mayweather fight with just about any excuse once the negotiations start.

3. His Instincts

5 of 7

Pacquiao's last exhibition of a killer instinct was in 2009 when he thrashed Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO).

Since then, his opponents have survived to last the full distance. Are they too big for him to slay or has Pacquiao grown a soft-spot in his heart for giants?

Pacquiao begged the ref to end the fight when Margarito's eye was clearly beaten shut rather than continue to beat his eye out of commission to end the fight by stoppage.

Pacquiao dapped Mosley for what must have been 14 to 20 times over the course of their friendfest of a boxing match.

Now the biggest trash-talker against him outside of Mayweather who claims to have beaten him twice doesn't get the full force of a Pacquiao beating. Is Pacquiao losing his will to kill? Age can do that.

2. His Coach

6 of 7

Manny Pacquiao has a great coach in Freddie Roach. He seems to genuinely care about Pacquiao. Pacquiao seems to be nearly completely loyal to Roach. If Roach suggested retirement, he'd follow suit.

Roach knows more about his most famous pupil than anyone else, if he believes it's time to go, Pacquiao will go. Did the Pacquiao-Marquez III fight expose something? Will Roach ask Pacquiao to retire soon?

1. His Money

7 of 7

He's got enough money and endorsement deals. Why keep getting hit in the face?

His fans? Whatever. The people are fickle. They love you today, hate you tomorrow. The money is what matters and Pacquiao has plenty.

Getting hit in the face sucks even if you can take it. So why continue when you got millions coming from other ventures? That's a question Pacquiao is likely asking himself at this very moment.
