Boston Red Sox: Dale Sveum to the Cubs; an Update on Red Sox Managerial Search
It was just announced that Dale Sveum is to be introduced as the new manager of the Theo Epstein led Chicago Cubs tomorrow in a press conference.
Sveum was believed to be the front runner for the Boston Red Sox job as well but yesterday, after second interviews with the Cubs and Sox, the Cubs made an offer and the Red Sox did not.
With news that Pete Mackanin is no longer in the running for the manager's job in Boston, the Red Sox now have three guys to choose from that they have interviewed: Gene Lamont, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Torey Luvollo.
But team president, Larry Lucchino, said the Sox are likely to expand the managerial search but left it at that without any further details.
That being said, lets take a look at the Red Sox options for the manager position.
Gene Lamont
1 of 4Gene Lamont is the current third base coach for the Detroit Tigers. He has managing experience in the big leagues and was actually named 1993 AL Manager of the Year during his tenure with the Chicago White Sox.
The other team he managed was the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1997-2000.
Lamont played in the major leagues, although sparingly, in two short stints with the Tigers where he posted a .233 average with four home runs.
It has been reported that president Larry Lucchino said that Lamont is the front runner for the manager's position, which could be misleading as he also said they plan on reopening the search to new candidates.
Sandy Alomar, Jr.
2 of 4Sandy Alomar, Jr. is the current bench coach for the Cleveland Indians and played 20 years in the big leagues for seven different teams.
He has been a name that has come up in many managerial positions but with no experience managing a team at any level, he may not be the guy the Red Sox are looking for.
The Spanish speaking Alomar, Jr. would be a welcoming sign to Latin American baseball players as they would have a coach they could communicate with in their native language.
As of now, he is still in the conversation for the open managerial position.
Torey Lovullo
3 of 4Lovullo is the current first base coach for the Toronto Blue Jays and has also served as the manager of the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate the Pawtucket Red Sox.
As of right now it seems as though Lovullo is still in the running and is expected to get a second interview with the team.
During his career in baseball he played sparingly for seven different teams from 1988-1999. In those seven seasons he accumulated a batting average of .224 with 15 home runs.
Mystery Candidate
4 of 4As of the last 48 hours, team president Larry Lucchino has said that the Red Sox will reopen their managerial search and add one or more new candidates with major league experience.
It has been rumored that they could have possible interest in Bobby Valentine.
Although he has had no major league experience, one guy I think they should interview is Tampa Bay Rays bench coach, Dave Martinez.
Martinez has been under Joe Maddon during the Rays spectacular past couple seasons in which they saw their first three postseason appearances. Someone like Maddon, who plays the percentages, is someone that would fit into the Red Sox way of thought.
With the search reopening and different sources reporting different front runners, I wouldn't be surprised if this dragged out into December, which Lucchino pointed out isn't a bad thing as they hired former manager, Terry Francona, in December.
