Penn State South Park Video: Did Hit Show Cross the Line?

Ryan RudnanskyNov 16, 2011

Comedy Central's South Park has been known to be over the top, at times even offensive; the show basically has no boundaries and will weigh in on any subject.

That's why when the latest Penn State scandal hit America out of nowhere, it wasn't a surprise South Park had something to say.

Now I will say this: I think South Park is genius in a lot of ways, particularly with how it's become a social commentary on everything absurd in America. It's also one of a handful of shows that gives its opinion, and doesn't try to sugarcoat things.

But I will also say this: South Park's latest commentary on the Penn State scandal not only didn't allow enough time to pass, it should have never been aired in the first place.

When you're talking about the allegations surrounding former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who is facing 40 counts of sexually abusing underage boys, that is a matter that cannot and should not be joked about.

This is not only one of the biggest nightmares in college sports history, with numerous high-profile members of the community sweeping Sandusky's alleged doings under the rug—it may become one of the most egregious cases in sports history.

Sandusky allegedly sexually abused eight boys in a period of 15 years and no one stopped him. So when South Park jokes about something so heinous, which has hurt so many people it goes far beyond being insensitive or offensive—it becomes as monstrous as Sandusky's alleged doings.

In the clip, a few kids are sitting in Child Protective Services when a case worker comes in and sits down with them.

Says the case worker, "Now I'm looking over your file and I see you kids have all been horribly, physically and emotionally abused...oh, whoops, that isn't your case file, it's the Penn State University Gazette! Haha, I'm joking."

He goes on to say they're going to be put in a foster home and he needs to know if they'd rather go to "Neverland Ranch, the Catholic church or Penn State University."

While shock value is part of South Park's intrigue, I really couldn't believe it even touched on this subject, and the way it did so is horrific.

It's one thing to poke fun of celebrities, cultural issues, or politics, it's quite another to joke about an alleged crime that is one step below murder in a lot of people's eyes.

It makes me angry, and it makes me sick.

It makes me want to never watch South Park again.
