Ivan Calderon: Authorities Seize $4M Worth of Cocaine from Puerto Rican Estate
Light flyweight boxer Ivan Calderon has some explaining to do.
According to a release from the Associated Press, federal agents in Puerto Rico have seized roughly $4 million worth of cocaine from a house owned by Calderon. A DEA spokeswoman says 225 kilograms of cocaine were found in the house, which is located in the coastal town of Humacao.
For the record, 225 kilograms equates to about 500 pounds.
The raid on the house followed the arrest of an alleged Puerto Rican drug trafficker who has been charged with smuggling cocaine into the United States via the Dominican Republic.
In a statement issued to a Puerto Rican television station, Calderon denied having any knowledge of the drugs, saying the house the drugs were seized at is one of several properties he owns. He was unaware of any illegal activity there, he said.
Calderon has been fighting professionally since 2001, compiling a career record of 35-2-1. His most recent fight was in late October, in which he beat Felipe Rivas via a split decision. Away from the ring, Calderon has been involved with several youth charities in his native Puerto Rico, winning an award for his charitable efforts back in 2007.
Given his background and reputation, it's entirely possible that Calderon is merely caught up in all of this. The house may be his property, but it is conceivable that illegal activities could have happened there without his knowledge. If so, his name will be cleared.
One way or the other, this is a developing story. Keep an eye out for updates.
