Has the WWE run out ideas?

Watching RAW over the last few months, I have begun to see a striking similarity between the issues that have risen between CM Punk, John Cena and Alberto Del Rio over the WWE Championship, and the issues that occurred in years past.

The first similarity I see is between the attitude and wrestling "style" of WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio and former WWE superstar John Bradshaw Layfield (better known as JBL).

JBL was the WWE Champion for many months during the years 2004-05, until Cena finally defeated the champion for his title at WrestleMania 21.

JBL was one of the most hated champions of all-time because he was cocky, arrogant and won most of his matches as a result of cheating or lucky breaks. In a much similar way, Alberto Del Rio has the same reaction for the WWE fans.

Del Rio has retained the WWE Title due to some cheating and lucky breaks as well, the most recent coming on October 23rd at Vengeance when he defeated Cena in a Last Man Standing Match with the help of The Miz and R-Truth's interference in the match.

The plot lines for these two superstars are also strikingly similar as well. When JBL was the champion, WWE Superstars would get title shot after title shot, but would get screwed over due to JBL's cheating or interference from his "cabinet" (Orlando Jordan and Doug and Danny Basham).

Although some of JBL's opponents were the fan favorites, it took John Cena to finally pry the WWE Championship out of the clutches of JBL.

Similarly now, Cena is in the midst of fighting for the WWE title, but this time there is a new person playing "the good guy" and a new person playing "the bad guy."

Cena now getting mixed emotions from the fans, some liking him and some hating him, he has almost become a background story due to his upcoming matches teaming with the Rock at Survivor Series and facing him at WrestleMania in April in one of the most anticipated matches of our time.

Now it is CM Punk who is playing the role of Cena and Del Rio who plays the role of JBL. No matter how many times Punk fights Del Rio, he ends up losing to him due to Del Rio's personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez, or other WWE superstars interfering in their matches.

The WWE fans hate Del Rio in the same way as they hated JBL, and the fans love Punk like they loved Cena.

Perhaps this is just coincidence, or maybe it was intentional by the WWE and they hoped that people would notice, but how could you not notice how JBL and Del Rio's entrances are virtually identical. JBL used to come out to the ring in his limo every match, and Del Rio comes out to the ring every match in a different sports car.

Whatever the case, a coincidence or not, JBL and Alberto Del Rio are extremely similar in their plot stories as well as their attitudes. It has come to my attention, and I'm sure it has come to the attention of other WWE fans as well.
