Jerry Sandusky: What Penn State Must Do to Atone for Sins
Jerry Sandusky’s scandal has put Penn State on high alert and there does not seem to be anything the school can do to fix all of the problems that have come as a result of this entire incident.
The more you read about Sandusky, the work he was involved with and his relationship with the Nittany Lions football program, the more it becomes clear that the powers that be—namely Joe Paterno—knew more than they let on, which actually makes things worse for them.
David Zucchino of the Los Angeles Times wrote a story yesterday detailing Sandusky’s involvement with a boys’ summer football camp on Penn State’s satellite campus that ran from 2002-2008.
According to the article, officials prohibited him from holding the camp on the main campus but had no problem with it being held on the Erie, Pa. campus, and he had daily contact with boys from fourth grade through high school age.
So, considering that and all the other charges that have been levied against Sandusky, how do the Nittany Lions go about fixing all of this?
The simple answer is they probably can’t. Nothing they do will give any of the victims their lives back. They will be haunted by this forever, no matter what happens to Sandusky or anyone else involved with this disgusting ordeal.
One way they can begin the healing process for themselves, which sounds really stupid to say because their problems are largely self-inflicted as they allowed Sandusky to stay part of the program, is dump everyone associated with the football program and the school president.
Yes, that means letting head coach Joe Paterno walk away. There have been reports in The New York Times that the school is working on some kind of exit strategy for him, which would probably be the best thing for everyone.
Anyone and everyone who had knowledge of the situation and still allowed Sandusky to be a part of the program has to go, no questions asked.
Other than that, there really is nothing the university can do. It is going to be hated and vilified for taking such a lackadaisical approach to dealing with this matter and it deserves to for allowing this sick, twisted man to be on campus even after they had knowledge of his transgressions.
