Why Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs Should Cut Ties with Mike Quade

Gabe ZaldivarNov 1, 2011

The Chicago Cubs have their brash young exec in Theo Epstein, now they have to find the manager that will lead the Cubbies on the field. Epstein has to realize that man is not Mike Quade.

The Chicago Cubs manager is in the middle of a firing squad at the moment. Many Cubs fans would have Epstein fire his guns in Quade's direction.

The lack of control he showed on this roster that was more a circus than a professional ball team is cited. The fact that he had issues with his pitching and rotation decisions is another.

For now, Quade waits with his head firmly placed on the chopping block. The only plus for Quade is that his fate is sure to be decided shortly. Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat tweeted as much.

Now we sit and wait for a swift decision. I for one don't think Quade should be fired for his shortcomings, but more for the promise that other candidates bring to the job.

We know what the Cubs get with Quade. That kind of future should be averted as quickly as possible. Granted Epstein needs to get comfortable as the face of this franchise before he starts firing coaches left and right, but I think the writing is on the wall.

There is just too much talent out there. The obvious choice to succeed Quade is Ryne Sandberg, a decision that would quell the frustration of Cubs fans and prove Epstein wants to further the Cubs brand by hiring from within.

Former manager Lou Pinella has confidence in Sandberg. He told ESPN as much.

"

As far as managing in the major leagues, I think he's paid his dues... I think Ryne will be on the list of some of these clubs and hopefully he will get an opportunity to manage in the big leagues. I'm sure he's looking forward to that.

"

There is also the manager the Red Sox have targeted as well. Dale Sveum is getting a lot of love around the league as a potential great leader in the majors.

Epstein will no doubt have Sveum on his shortlist. Boston.com reports the Brewers hitting coach would make a perfect choice as the next Cubs manager.

Compared to Quade, both would be far better leaders of what should be a very different looking roster headed into 2012.

As the Quade situation heads into a critical juncture, all signs point to the Cubs manager being cut for a far more promising future in another candidate.
