New York Mets Need To Make Cole Hamels Eat His Words
Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies are talking again, and its right at the Mets, "Last year and this year I think we did believe that they were choke artists." You can't argue that Hamels shouldn't be talking or its not appropriate because he is a World Series Champion, and has all the right to talk.
The Phillies have grown to really dislike the Mets and have no problem telling the media what they really think.
But Hamels did say something interesting to finish off his interview. "But, yeah, that's kind of what we believed and I think we're always going to believe that until they prove us wrong," Hamels said. "For the past two years, they've been choke artists."
The part where he goes on to say until they prove us wrong. Well, this is the year for the Mets to finally stand up for themselves. Two years ago, the collapse was new, the Phillies talked, but did nothing once they won so they couldn't talk for long. Last year though, Beltran was the one to trash talk with Jimmy Rollins, the thing is Carlos and Mets just coughed it up again, but this time Philly went on to win it all and now have all the reasons to gloat and trash talk.
The Phillies will be cocky, arrogant, and confident all year. It will all come down to September, no matter if Philly is in first or behind the Mets, because the Mets will have to prove they aren't choke artist. And that can only happen in September, where they must win games and show Philly whose the best team.
But before September the Mets have to show the Phillies that each game will be a fight. Each game will be played as a playoff game, each game will be a rivalry game.
Frankly, the Mets have to hate the Phillies. They have to hate the Phils and Hamels for talking this winter like the Phillies hate Jose Reyes and all his salsa moves. They have to despise the Phillies and fans. There is no question that the Philadelphia Players, Organization and fans hate everything about New York and the Mets.
Chase Utley has cursed off the New York fans even in the All-Star Game.
The New York Met fans hate the Phillies for sure. They want to be where the Philly fans are, fans of World Champions. We have all year to see if that will happen, most importantly, next September.
But that doesn't mean the Mets can take this rivalry to the next step and maybe show Hamels a little love the first time he steps up to the plate. And then follow that up by doing the same to Rollins, and then maybe, just maybe this rivalry will become as big as it should be.
Players, managers, owners, and fans that just don't like each other and that each game will have its own story. The ball is in the Mets court, the Phillies have started it,now time for the Mets to talk the talk, and then walk the walk.
