Can Drew Brees and Company March the Saints Into the Playoffs?

The 2008 football season has been one of ups and downs for the New Orleans Saints. Still, they have managed to put themselves into a position to make the playoffs.

The Saints have had their share of bad breaks this season. They have a total of 10 players who have started or have contributed to the team this season on injured reserve. Of the 10, seven are on the defensive side of the ball including four DB's.

A big distraction for the Saints to overcome is the suspension of three of its star players by the NFL. The suspensions are for four games and would have the three out for the rest of the season. The three players are RB Duece McAllister, DE Will Smith, and DE Charles Grant. A lawsuit was filed on behalf of the players to allow them to appeal the ruling and continue playing.

The Saints high octane offense is led by QB Drew Brees. Brees leads the NFL in several passing categories this season and has been helped out by the emergence of WR Lance Moore and RB Pierre Thomas. The return of WR Marques Colsten and RB Reggie Bush has given the Saints more reason to believe that they can run the table and make it to the post season.

The Saints rap up the regular season with a game in Chicago tonight and next week travel to Detroit to play the Lions. The season finale brings the red hot NFC South division leading Carolina Panthers to the Dome to face the Saints.

I believe the Saints can make the post season, but to do that they will have to play error free football against Chicago in the "Windy City" tonight.

Going to Detroit next week may not be an easy task either. The Lions could still be winless and hungry for a win. It is very possible they could catch the Saints looking past them at Carolina.

With a little help and running the table, the Saints could find themselves in the post season.
