WWE Wrestle Mania X-7 Is an Overrated WWE PPV Event

Justin WatryOct 26, 2011

Yes, I said it. Yes, it is my opinion only. Before I go any further, let me put up a few notes:

1. I loved the show. I really did enjoy it!

2. It may have been the "climax" of the Attitude Era.

3. It featured some of the best matches from the past decade or so.

With that being said, I still feel fans overrated this PPV show. My criticism with this show is not about the main event matches. It is hard for anyone to argue against the last hour or two of the show. That was top notch stuff!

However, it seems a lot of people just like to forget about the beginning of the show, as if it was also classic match after classic match after classic. Guess what folks? A lot of matches at Wrestle Mania X-7 were not very good!

Yes, I know! How dare I say such a thing about that show? Every match was great, right? The entire show from top to bottom was simply amazing. Greatest show in WWE history, huh?

Let me begin with the opener. Jericho defending the Intercontinental title against William Regal seems like it would be a fine match. Well, it wasn't at all. Rounding it at seven minutes, it was about as dull as you could get from these two. Great performers, but on this night? Meh. Jericho retained...moving on...

Next was Tazz and the APA beating Right to Censor. Do I even have to explain this one? It was a six man tag team match and lasted less than five minutes. Complete filler and did nothing for me!

Kane vs. Raven vs. The Big Show was a triple threat match for the Hardcore title. This was a fun ten minutes. I am not going to lie. However, my problem is the match went backstage. Yes, that was part of the fun, but the live crowd deserved more. You have 70,000 fans in a stadium, and you go backstage for the match? Not cool.

Eddie Guerrero defeated Test for the European Title. This was another short match, coming in at nine minutes. Again, two great performers, but this match never clicked. I just wanted it to end. After a messy finish and interference, the bout was over. Another one under ten minutes...come on...

There was a match with Kurt Angle up next, but I am going to skip that one for obvious reasons.

Chyna squashing Ivory for the Women's Title was one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen. Yes, that is saying a lot. Rounding the match to a large three minutes, this match just about killed the division ten years ago. Chyna won easily, defended the belt a few times, and the title (and herself) went away for a few months. Just terrible!

Finally, we get to the legendary matches! Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon was great. I loved every minute of their street fight.

Edge and Christian beating the Dudleys and the Hardys was another epic TLC match. I enjoyed the Summerslam 2000 match better, but this one was also amazing.

The gimmick battle royal was fun, but it only lasted five minutes. I can't really "mark out" over too much here because it was over too soon. This match was a fun ride down memory lane, but it also just took up time from the show. It was cool to see, but if they never do it again, I wouldn't complain.

The Undertaker vs. Triple H was a great match. Yes, the ref was knocked out for about ten minutes, but I don't care. These guys destroyed each other, and Taker won. Triple H looked strong, but The Undertaker looked just a little bit stronger.

The main event needs no words. Awesome main event! Great work from Stone Cold and The Rock! While the heel turn was failed by Steve Austin, the match here was about as memorable as you can get from WWE. Outside of the "Vince/Stone Cold" ending, this was one of the best matches of all time. Bar none!

As you can see, I enjoyed the show! It may be one of the greatest shows ever produced by WWE! My only problem is the entire card was just not very good. The main event matches? Yes, they were all awesome and created amazing memories!

This show had epic matches, no doubt. However, that does not ignore the first couple matches equaling a grand total of "nothing." Looking at it from a top to bottom show? Yes, many fans overrate Wrestle Mania X-7 from 2001.
