Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings: 49ers and 4 Defenses That Will Rack Up Points

Alex KayOct 25, 2011

If you are one of those knuckleheads that doesn’t play matchups in fantasy football, you need to read this.

There are a number of solid options just waiting to be found on waivers to play this week at the D/ST position on your fantasy team, and you need to realize that just starting your Steelers defense each week isn’t a smart idea.

Pittsburgh plays New England this week and is going to get smoked.

You’d be crazy to start that defense, but you’d be surprised how many people do because they ignore matchups and go on reputation.

Let’s take a look at four defenses that have great matchups and will certainly score a ton of points.

San Francisco 49ers

Jim Harbaugh’s gang has been performing exceptionally well this season after many predicted this would be the worst defense in the league.

They certainly aren’t bad and have been giving up just 16.2 points per game.

The Niners have an easy matchup against the anemic Cleveland Browns offense this week, and they should capitalize on mistakes and keep this a low-scoring game.

These guys have a rap for being a terrible defense, but they have proven that they aren’t nearly the same as last year.

They grabbed two interceptions and scored one of them last week against the Titans and now have a very desirable matchup against rookie Blaine Gabbert and the Jaguars.

The Bengals have been perhaps the most surprising team in the league this season, and their defense is a key reason for this.

They only allow 278.5 yards per game and have been stymieing some pretty solid teams.

They play the second-worst offensive team in the league this week—the Seattle Seahawks, who will be lead by either Charlie Whitehurst or a banged-up Tarvaris Jackson.

This is a juicy matchup, and the Bengals are a must-start in any format.

The Titans have the pleasure of beating up on the Indianapolis Colts this week, and thank heavens it won’t be nationally televised in primetime.

I think everyone is sick of seeing the disgusting Colts offense play on the big stage, and they should quietly get their butts kicked by Tennessee this week.
