Dana White Twitter: GSP Injured, out of UFC 137 Main Event vs. Carlos Condit

Nick CaronOct 18, 2011

The string of injuries continues in the UFC today as UFC president Dana White has confirmed via Twitter that the reigning welterweight champion has been forced out of his UFC 137 main-event fight against Carlos Condit.

This news shakes the entire UFC 137 fight card which has already been bounced around quite a bit since the original fight between St-Pierre and Nick Diaz was scheduled.

Diaz has since been dropped from the main event slot due to missing numerous press events and was originally dropped from the card entirely, but is now set to fight B.J. Penn in what will now end up being the main event of UFC 137. The UFC president did also add that the Penn vs. Diaz fight, although being the main event, will remain a three-round contest.

Perhaps the most unfortunate news is that there is now no opponent for Carlos Condit who was looking forward to his first shot at UFC gold. The former WEC welterweight champion was on a four-fight win streak which included victories over consensus top contenders Jake Ellenberger, Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim.

According to White, Condit will also be pulled from the UFC 137 card and will wait for GSP to recover.

White has also confirmed via Twitter that the injury to St-Pierre is a knee injury, though the details are still vague on what the specific injury is and how long the welterweight champion could be out. He did, however, add that he believes that the champion could be ready in "a couple months."

If St-Pierre is out for an extended period of time, there could be the potential of an interim champion as the UFC has gone that route in the past. With the welterweight division as stacked as it is, however, there may be more controversy in putting together an interim title fight than there would be in just leaving the division open until GSP returns.

Update:

B.J. Penn, who has a long history with St-Pierre, also responded to the news via Twitter. His comment was quick, to the point and only needed two characters.

Another perennial top contender also got involved in the Twitter festivities when Josh Koscheck tweeted at Dana White, likely indicating that he would be happy to step in to fight Condit on short notice at UFC 137.
