Dan Wheldon Crash Video: Tragic Wreck That Led to Death of IRL Legend

It's scary enough when two cars crash in an IndyCar race. These are vehicles that are designed to move extremely fast, and the wrecks are that much more severe as a result.

If a two-car wreck is bad, a 15-car wreck is an utter nightmare. And unfortunately, that nightmare became a reality on Sunday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Ultimately, the wreck proved to be fatal for reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon, according to NBC Sports.

Wheldon was unable to survive his injuries despite a reported 20 doctors on hand making every effort to save his life. He was 33 years old.

The race has been canceled, but coverage of the event is ongoing on ABC. A five-lap tribute is planned in Wheldon's honor and will start shortly.

The wreck happened very early on in the IZOD IndyCar Series season finale, and it included several cars flipping over and catching fire. You can watch how this accident happened in the above video, but be warned that it is a very distressing sight to behold.

As SpeedTV.com tells the story, the wreck was triggered when Wade Cunningham made wheel-to-wheel contact with James Hinchcliffe. Cunningham then spun and hit Charlie Kimball, and that started a chain reaction.

Also per SpeedTV.com's report, the other drivers involved in the crash were James Jakes, Vitor Meira, J.R. Hildebrand, Townsend Bell, Jay Howard, Tomas Scheckter, Paul Tracy, EJ Viso, Alex Lloyd, Pippa Mann, Will Power and Buddy Rice. Pippa Mann and J.R. Hildebrand also required medical attention.

There are a lot of things that we still don't know about the wreck, and there is really not much that can be said yet about Wheldon's passing. Thoughts and prayers go out to Wheldon's family. He has been lost way too soon.
