UFC 136 Results: How Far Are We from a Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo Superfight?

G DOct 9, 2011

Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo demonstrated once again why they are two of the elite lower weight fighters in mixed martial arts today.

As both Edgar and Aldo remained champion in their respective weight classes, there has been more speculation than ever about the possibility of the two squaring off in a future "super fight."

While there was discussion of Edgar dropping a weight class to the Featherweight division, all talks of that have now come to pass after his victory over Gray Maynard at UFC 136.

While Edgar vs. Jose could happen in the future, it'll be a while until it does.

Aldo, who hasn't lost since November 2005, has weeded out nearly every opponent that's come his way.

After winning 20 of his 21 career bouts, many feel the only remaining contest for Aldo is unbeaten Chad Mendes.

If UFC fans want any hope of the super fight between Aldo and Edgar becoming a reality, the Featherweight champion will have to get through the highly dangerous Mendes.

But, it's Edgar who has the most work to do.

In a stacked Lightweight division, Edgar has plenty of competition to put his title up for grabs against.

Likely to face the winner of Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson at UFC on Fox in November, Edgar will once again be put to the test in a five-round battle.

If Edgar were to come out on top, he would still have plenty of competition in of course Gray Maynard, Melvin Guillard, the loser of Guida/Henderson, and even Anthony Pettis.

While fans across the globe want to see these two lighter weight phenoms square off, it's unlikely to happen anytime soon.

In order for it to happen, Edgar will have to be dethroned of the Lightweight championship, or, would have to beat all of the contenders listed above.

We are too far removed from the Edgar vs. Aldo super fight.
