UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

G DOct 8, 2011

Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard met in one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history, as action began in front of a sold-out Toyota Center at UFC 136.

Looking very similar to their historical bout at UFC 125, Maynard dominated action early.

Edgar led with a left-right combo to the chin of Maynard, and the Texas crowd went to their feet. Attempting to gain points from the judges, Edgar was the aggressor in angling to take down Maynard, but nearly every attempt was stuffed.

Maynard landed a huge uppercut that sent Edgar stumbling almost identical to their last fight.

"The Bully" began teeing off on the champion as Edgar tried to recover by taking Maynard down. Edgar was too hurt as Maynard continued to swing away.

Blood began pouring out of the nose of Edgar as commentator Joe Rogan stated his nose appeared to be broken.

Lucky to escape Round 1, Edgar came back strong in the second frame. Despite being absolutely dominated early, Edgar regained confidence by landing minor combos to the body of Maynard.

Action seemed to have slowed down as neither fighter made it a point to engage in on the other. Edgar ended Round 2 with another combo.

In third round, Edgar began landing leg kicks as Maynard appeared to have died down a bit from his dominance in the first round.

Once again it was Edgar to steal away points from the judges as Maynard looked content with the way things were going.

Edgar landed an uppercut at the end of the round, stealing away a second straight round from Maynard.

As momentum continued to shift away from Maynard, Edgar's speed and combos took over as he landed strike after strike.

Then, midway through the fourth round, Edgar landed a right hook that sent Maynard back.

After another right hook, Maynard was on the ground.

Edgar quickly pounced on the hurt Maynard and began swinging his way to victory. The fight was stopped, and suddenly Edgar had avenged the only loss of his career to remain the UFC lightweight champion of the world.

The Edgar-Maynard rivalry now stands at 1-1-1.
