Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard Breakdown and Prediction

Adam OsterkampContributor IIIOctober 8, 2011

Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar will meet in UFC 136 main event in Houston, Texas. The story between these two is one of the greatest in UFC history, and after tonight, all unanswered questions should be answered.

Edgar has never actually beaten Maynard and yet Edgar is the one holding the belt. The two had an amazing fight back at UFC 125 that ended as a draw.

These two men are extremely skilled athletes. Each fighter has the ability and skill to match the other in ways that make for a very competitive fight.

There are, of course, several ways this fight could go. The likelihood of the fight going to the ground for an extended period of time isn’t very likely.

Both fighters are skilled wrestlers with great sprawls. If Maynard does decide to take Edgar to the ground, he’ll need to watch out for Frankie Edgar’s brown belt-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Maynard needs to keep this fight standing as he clearly has more power in his fists than Edgar.

Edgar doesn’t have the ability—at least from what we’ve seen—to put Maynard away with his striking. The current lightweight champion does however have the ability to out-strike Maynard.

Edgar would do well to keep this fight standing as well. One of the reasons this fight is so interesting is because Gray Maynard will plan on putting Edgar away, but Edgar will most likely look to grind out a decision victory.

Edgar, while very skilled, is going up against a man he will not be able to control on the ground. Trying to grind out a standing decision victory against a man who has more powerful striking is a long and dangerous road for the champ.

The story of this fight is going to be the striking and Maynard is going to do everything he can to put Edgar out.

Prediction: Gray Maynard victory via third round T(KO).
