Tim Tebow: Riding Denver's Bench Does No Good for QB or Team
Earlier in the week, I wrote this. The point was not to rip Tebow in any way. As a matter of fact, I am a fan of Tebow's and have been since he was at Florida.
No, the point was to say that Orton has actually done a reasonable job with a team that's just not very talented.
But, at the end of the day, the most important number is wins.
Since starting the 2009 season with a 6-0 record, the Broncos have been dismal. They finished that season 2-8 and missed the playoffs, went 4-12 in 2010 and are now 1-3 and without much hope to make any improvements from 2010.
Meanwhile, Tebow, maybe the best quarterback in college history, is sitting on the bench. Depending on who you ask, he is either the second- or third-stringer.
The fans in Denver are growing impatient, as they are still looking for the first quarterback to step up and lead the team since John Elway's retirement after the 1998 season.
They want to see Tebow, but the John Fox is remaining stubborn in his stance that Tebow is not ready.
In an interview with San Diego's XEPRS-AM, Fox had this to say about Tebow.
""It's not the same as college. It is a different game. You've got to come in and learn a new system. You've got to learn different coverages. It's just a different game, and it takes a minute for any rookie, in particular at quarterback, which may be the hardest position in sports to know and learn."
"
He went on to say that he thinks Tebow will be a good quarterback, but that the shortened training camp hurt the young quarterback.
Actually, that's not a bad argument, but something isn't quite right here.
Let's be really nice and call the Broncos a mediocre team. The fact that Fox hasn't given Tebow any looks at quarterback probably means that he's not sold on him.
For the record, I am not talking about a start. But Tebow's skills suggest that he can play in certain formations and be a situational quarterback. Even if Orton remains the starter, Tebow could come out and play in certain formations to show his value.
But that hasn't happened.
If Fox isn't going to give Denver and their fans at least a glimpse of what Tebow could bring them, then he needs to just let him go.
Fox didn't draft Tebow. Cutting Tebow wouldn't show a sign of failure in any way.
Something more definitive needs to happen with Tebow. He either needs to get some playing time or be gone.
The losses aren't going to stop in Denver. As long as things remain the same, the grumblings from fans won't either.
