Missouri State Hockey: Team Commemorates Breast Cancer Awareness with Pink Ice
There are few occasions where putting down pink ice will go over well with hockey fans, but this is definitely one of those instances.
On Monday, the Missouri State Ice Bears honored breast cancer awareness by laying down pink ice before their homestand against Northern Illinois on Friday and Saturday.
The weekend event, entitled Making Strides on Pink Ice, was organized in collaboration with Mediacom Ice Park and the American Cancer Society, and all proceeds will go toward breast cancer research.
As for the Ice Bears themselves, they will be wearing black and pink for the homestand instead of the standard maroon and white.
Just another good story out there. Every time you see gestures like this, it makes you feel good inside, that in a sports world largely dominated by money, teams still go above and beyond to help those in need. If you look around, this kind of stuff happens more than it appears, and it's a credit to the community, organizers and the human heart.
So often in sports it becomes all about money, as does much in our world. When you see people helping others unsolicited, it just goes to show that there is still plenty of kindness in this country and we still haven't forgotten what matters the most: humanity.
Regardless of how much this event raises, it really is a tribute to our society, giving to others without expecting anything in return. It's the kind of thing that makes us feel proud to live in this country, and it breaks through barriers like nothing else.
So, as the Ice Bears get set to take the ice at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in Springfield, Mo., those close by should show up simply to support a great cause and show appreciation for what Missouri State is doing.
Helping each other should never get old.
Additional Information about the event can be found on the hockey team's Facebook page.
