NFL Power Rankings Week 5: Which Teams Were Most Humbled in Week 4?

John RozumOct 3, 2011

Being humbled is something that happens a lot in the game of football.

No matter how impressive one team may be, there's always that one game that can be a reality check.

Even if a team has previous losses, adding one more the the record can knock out some of that cockiness.

Not to say the three mentioned teams are cocky, but maybe they just underestimated their Week 4 opponent.

Buffalo Bills

Buffalo was coming off a big win over the New England Patriots and a lot of fans across the country were hopping on their bandwagon, and rightfully so, as the Bills were an unexpected 3-0.

Well this week, Buffalo looked the part once again and led the 1-2 Bengals 17-3 at halftime.

To make a long story short, Buffalo pulled a New England and squandered off the lead only to lose 23-20 in the closing seconds.

Now this by no means that the Bills are an overrated team, because Cincy is a little better than given credit for, however, this loss only puts things back in perspective for Buffalo, and that if they want to be a legit AFC contender, playing a full 60 minutes every game is needed.

Philadelphia Eagles

Well if it hasn't happened yet, it has now, and the Philadelphia Eagles are already fighting for their playoff lives after only four games.

The home loss to San Francisco although even more humbling than the last, may be more disheartening than anything else.

Holding a 23-3 lead with under eight minutes to play in the third quarter, the 49ers scored 21 unanswered points to win 24-23.

Perhaps the first half is to blame, because there, Philadelphia had to settle for two field-goals from just outside the red-zone as opposed to scoring TDs.

In turn, the 'Niners were never really out of it as their defense bent, but didn't break, unlike Philadelphia's.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Week 1 demolition that the Baltimore Ravens put on Pittsburgh was most definitely a humbling experience.

However, thereafter the Steelers ran off two wins over Seattle and Indianapolis and got back to 2-1.

Also, the Houston Texans still had something to prove, as their two wins were only over the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins, while their loss was to the New Orleans Saints.

So, something had to give in this game, and although Pittsburgh only lost 17-10, the Texans arguably played one of their worst games all season, and did so without WR Andre Johnson for the second half.

Losing a close game on the road is tough enough, but knowing that your opponent was without their best player and they (Houston) had nine penalties for 64 yards, as well as only 318 total, The Steel Curtain knows they have a vehement amount of ground to make up in the AFC.
