WWE Hell in a Cell 2011 Results: Putting Pieces Together from Crazy Night
All hell seemed to break loose at Hell In A Cell as mayhem ruled the night. Most of the night had a lot of the mayhem happening outside of the cell, only to have it end inside the gigantic cell. Much of the discussion throughout the night centered around wanting to get out of Hell In A Cell, but the final moments of the night had much of the WWE roster wanting to get into the structure.
We saw two titles change hands on Sunday among a lot of unique moments. There are also some very confusing moments necessary to be pieced together in order to make sense of it. RAW and Smackdown this week will help to understand that as WWE is getting ready to welcome back Vengeance to the pay-per-view rotation. Before we get to that event, let's assess what occurred at Hell in a Cell and try to figure out what will happen next.
Sheamus Handles Christian, Looks to World Championship
1 of 8I still don't feel comfortable calling Sheamus "The Great White," so I will stick to "The Celtic Warrior" instead. Whatever you call him, he was able to dispose of Christian in the opening contest. The initial sight of The Miz and R-Truth at ringside with tickets in hand was unexpected and enjoyable. The simple fact that they were kicked out from the seats they had purchased likely led to their attitude for the rest of the night.
As for the match, Christian certainly gave it all to Sheamus, but it was not enough. Sheamus looked solid in the match and picked up a big victory. I stated before this event that this was an unofficial No. 1 contender's match of sorts, with the winner looking for a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Christian set a deal with Sheamus about a title match after he won the world title. I wonder if they agreed to let that stipulation work both ways.
The Real Sin Cara Stands Up, Disposes of Evil Imposter
2 of 8If you picked Sin Cara to win this match, you were a very smart person. The battle of good and evil was also turning into the battle between consciousness and taking a nap. For two masked luchadors that are very exciting, this match certainly wasn't that. Someone should have given them the memo that this match wasn't on tape delay because the botches continued for both men. It honestly makes you wonder if Sin Cara really does have any future as a legitimate threat to be a champion in the future.
The black outfit, dark titantron and eerie music was a nice touch for the evil Sin Cara. Now that the original has won the right to be called Sin Cara, you have to wonder if this feud is fully over or if they will continue it with the evil one under a new name. If WWE doesn't like inflicting pain to itself, they will refrain from continuing this and bring Daniel Bryan back into this feud, where heelish tendencies were setting in for a little while.
Air Boom Keeps Tag Titles Away from Vickie Guerrero and Company
3 of 8Air Boom had one of their best title defenses yet on Sunday, fending off Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger. Ziggler would have been the first person to hold the United States and Tag Team Championships simultaneously since The Miz did the same thing. Instead, Bourne and Kingston kept their reign alive in a pretty well-fought match. I doubt this is the last time you will see that match. WWE acted like it was such a shocking bonus match, but it was pretty clear to many that if Air Boom was on the card, they would face these two.
The chemistry from both teams was great, and it was one of the better matches in the night. I think this would have been the match that seeing R-Truth and The Miz in the crowd would have made more sense with. They made up for that by having them sneak backstage to attack Air Boom later on in the night. With Vickie and her clients being involved with David Otunga about this lawsuit business, we will have to see tonight on RAW what truly happens, which will likely include steps on reinstating Awesome Truth.
Mark Henry Shows Muscle, Stays as World's Strongest Champion
4 of 8For a few minutes at least, it looked like Mark Henry's 15-year journey for the World Heavyweight Championship would end after just 14 days. Thankfully, it didn't as the World's Strongest Champion fended off The Viper to retain the title in his first Hell In A Cell match of his career. Mark Henry took everything that Orton could deal him, but it still wasn't enough. Orton hit an RKO on Henry and, from how they have booked the RKO in the last few months, it seemed to be over. Henry kicked out, which had to make fans happy. It was like the good old days when more than one RKO was necessary to beat most people.
After the match, Henry tried to injure Orton, but Orton got himself out of the way and chased Henry into the back. It could have gone better, especially if Sheamus came out to help. Sheamus is now a strong face, he won a match that could be considered a No. 1 contender's match and had a feud with Henry back at SummerSlam. Henry/Sheamus at Vengeance makes sense, at least to me. Where that leaves Orton is anyone's guess. That's why injuring his ankle and keeping him out for a few weeks wasn't a terrible idea.
Same Old Cody Rhodes Retains New Throwback Intercontinental Championship
5 of 8I love that Cody Rhodes brought back the old look of the Intercontinental Championship. There was nothing wrong with the previous look, but going throwback and having the white strap is a very classy touch. It truly shows that Cody will bring prestige back to the title no matter what. He defended the title for the third time on television this week by holding off John Morrison. Even though the brand split seems to be over, why pick a RAW superstar, especially one in the doghouse like Morrison?
Rhodes complained about wrestling in a suit, but he had wrestled in a suit for weeks right after no longer being "Dashing," so I didn't have a problem with it. Rhodes looked great and perhaps this is Morrison's time to actually be fine with WWE officials. Then again, it is John Morrison. He could have done something else to anger someone else. He's probably in the doghouse for life.
Divas of Doom Finally Obtain Divas Championship
6 of 8It shouldn't have been too emotional for Beth Phoenix and her Divas of Doom ally Natalya, but it was. It is always emotional for Phoenix when she wins a title, whether she is face or heel. You can't truly fault her on it, either. If you won a title, you would be emotional too. Phoenix's career looked dead in the water with injuries and a lack of a push. For a while, she was just floating around on the roster. Now, she is a dominant champion and the Divas of Doom are in charge now.
Maybe this can be the start of some mixing up of the division. Call me crazy, but I don't need to see Eve and Kelly Kelly tag against Natalya and Beth Phoenix every week for the next three months. After all, there are other females after all that can wrestle...right?
Del Rio's Destiny Deja Vu
7 of 8Alberto Del Rio is a two-time WWE Champion as the title changes hands yet again. Would it really have been so terrible for Del Rio to retain at Night of Champions and win the way he did? Cena was not involved in the decision. In fact, he wasn't even inside the cell during the fall. He was locked out by Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez. I have to give credit to CM Punk for agreeing to take the fall in the way that he did. He may still have a claim to the title, but not in the way that Cena does, and it really should be the other way around. Cena has way too much else to worry about before April 1 and WrestleMania.
I don't fault the pipe at all, for it was a good touch for a heel to win in that way. Punk took a bunch of shots for it to happen and the pinfall kind of came out of nowhere. That might be because Del Rio needs a finisher that is more than just an armbreaker submission hold. I was just happy that Cena didn't break the chain with his strength, which really would have put down moments like when Mark Henry did it. Henry's were more impressive because at times, they weren't actually rigged and he really had to break real chains.
Miz/R-Truth Crash Cell Party, Nobody Else Invited
8 of 8The Miz and R-Truth ambushed the ring after the match, but the cell was raised and then lowered to only let the two and Cena back inside. HHH, John Laurinitus and most of the roster came down to try and get in, but nobody could. HHH was in a Hell In A Cell match two years ago and was locked out, but used bolt cutters to get in. How he didn't think of the same idea two years later is beyond me. Some random guy that nobody knows ended up cutting the chain and police ambushed Awesome Truth, who immediately surrendered.
Triple H's attack on the two cuffed men will likely land him in more hot water tonight, which will probably be a topic of conversation for David Otunga in the speak of a lawsuit. If what R-Truth and Miz did is illegal and grounds for arresting, aren't HHH's actions equally as wrong? If a fan jumps the guardrail and attacks the wrestlers, isn't it just as wrong for the wrestlers to beat them up?
