PGA Tour Golf: Who Are the 10 Best in the Game Right Now?
Right now, the golf world is a revolving door. Players enter to play for two weeks then get whipped out of the rotation and miss a cut.
Nobody's used to this who has only been watching golf since Tiger Woods was around. Why? Because every week you could count on him or Phil Mickelson playing and normally contending. There were other guys out there, and overall, you could probably name five golfers who were a cut above the rest.
Right now? You can if you look at the past few months. There's a pattern. It's just not that you have guys smoking the field and making headlines out of it. Nobody knows about the guys up there. So let's take some time to get to know the best 10 players in golf right now and why they are there.
MC (aka Those Who Just Missed Out)
1 of 11KJ Choi: He's had a great year, but without any real signature finishes, Choi misses out barely.
Jason Day: He's been hot, and he really could be on this list, but he's probably the 11th golfer on the list. The World Golf Rankings tend to disagree, but let's be serious, everyone hates the system anyway.
Dustin Johnson: This is probably a shock to most, but let's be serious. Dustin Johnson's season was disappointing compared to what we had hoped. Yes, he won. However, his inconsistency makes it hard to put him in the top 10, especially with the list assembled. Once his putter shows up, or rather he makes it show up, there's no question he will enjoy more success.
Phil Mickelson
2 of 11Every week Mickelson is on the course, he can make a headline. However, this year there has been a lot about the struggles he is facing in his game.
His magical short game appears to have disappeared, and Mickelson is still looking for some of it. He's had to regress in the world of putting and move to a long putter. It's just not the same Mickelson.
However, despite all of that, he's still had a win, two second place finishes and six top 10s in 19 tournaments. That's not bad for a guy who's struggling with his game. However, on this list, his struggles stick him right at the back of the list, barely ahead of Jason Day and Dustin Johnson.
Matt Kuchar
3 of 11He's the only guy on the list without a win, but let's be serious. He's also the only guy on the list with 16 top 25s.
Matt Kuchar has two runner up finishes, a third place finish, totals nine top 10s as of right now and we wonder why he always smiles.
It's a shame that we haven't noticed him more. He's played great golf this year, but we only recognize the winners. Sometimes the guy who just plods through and puts up top notch finishes is just as good.
That's the case for Matt Kuchar.
Keegan Bradley
4 of 11He sewed up Rookie of the Year at Atlanta Athletic Club but is still battling for a President's Cup spot.
Keegan Bradley has had a remarkable year of golf, but it hasn't been spectacular. He has two top 10s outside of his two wins, 10 top 25s, but has also missed 10 cuts.
A major and a win at the HP Byron Nelson will get you on the list, and ahead of some guys, but next year, the focus needs to be only five missed cuts. That's what makes a golfer better is by having that chance every weekend. That's why Bradley is below the following golfers on this list.
Steve Stricker
5 of 11There are no words that can describe Steve Stricker adequately. If you wanted a face to represent the game, there is no reason not to choose him. He's quiet, respectful, well-liked and he isn't too bad at golf either.
Stricker's calm hands have made him a force on tour for numerous years.
Now all it's gonna take is a major to make his career complete. However, despite that right now, Stricker is at the top of the game, and he used it to tell Fred Couples that he wanted Tiger Woods.
Adam Scott
6 of 11I don't know how it works. The putter that comes up to your chest that you lose feel with and that makes it harder to hit long putts works for Adam Scott. It's inexplicable.
But it's been a great asset to Scott's game. It took his game and made him a complete golfer. Had he tried that 10 years ago, Scott would have probably been laughed off tour for trying a sternum putter.
Look who's laughing now... Steve Williams. But Adam Scott is the one making him capable of laughing.
Frankly put, if the putter stays how it is, we will finally realize how good Adam Scott should have been for his entire career.
Charl Schwartzel
7 of 11I'm going to say it again. I called Charl Schwartzel as a great player before he won the Masters. I saw the potential coming.
I didn't know there was this much potential, but I do now, as does everyone else. Schwartzel has excelled on not one but two tours, something that is incredibly difficult given the toll travel can take on one's self.
It's fantastic that he came to fruition because it really is a pleasure to watch him swing and play. Even with one of the thinnest FedEx Cup schedules, he is still in the running for the grand prize at the Tour Championship as of now and certainly won't be bumped from it either.
Nick Watney
8 of 11This is proof that no matter how well you can play it can and probably will go unnoticed if you're an American not named Tiger Woods, Fred Couples or Phil Mickelson.
Nick Watney is a spectacular golfer and a great asset to the game of golf. He has two wins this year, including a WGC, and also has nine top 10s total and 14 top 25s out of 19 events. He's basically Matt Kuchar consistent with two wins.
Just keep watching him, it may take some time, but he holds the promise of two or three majors that America is hurting to have him realize.
Webb Simpson
9 of 11The hottest player on the PGA Tour as of late. However, it isn't just as of late that he's been playing good golf. With 17 top 25s in 22 tournaments, nine top 10s and two big wins within weeks of each other, Webb Simpson proved he deserves to be considered as one of the best players this year.
While Nick Watney may have a little more media attention (not that either get very much), Simpson edges him for best golfer in America right now. And it's a pretty good race between the two.
Two years of around 50 percent of cuts made on tour toughened this young talent up, and hopefully, his career takes off the way it appears it can.
Rory McIlroy
10 of 11It is sickening how good Rory McIlroy has been. He's succeeded all over this year. Majors, Europe, America, everything has been smooth for Rory.
Even a little tree root couldn't derail his game, as McIlroy has come back and contended for a win already.
The PGA Tour needs to do everything in its power to get him to come back next year. It sounds like he wants to, but it needs to be known how much we want to see him.
There aren't enough ways to describe McIlroy's play. It's been fantastic, and although Tiger may not be right about his game right now, his prediction about Rory being No. 1 in the world is certainly a very solid pick.
Luke Donald
11 of 11Luke Donald has the chance to dominate two tours in a fashion no one has ever seen before. After a rocky first PGA Tour tournament, Donald has taken off with his short game (chipping and putting, not him hitting it short) that has held him through.
The only thing you can say is his major performance was disappointing. So what?
He has 11 top 10s in 16 events. He's been in the top 25 and has made 13 out of 14 cuts on the PGA Tour.
And let's not forget he's played a very full schedule as well over in Europe.
Hands down, without a major, Luke Donald has been consistently the top player in the world. To say otherwise would be a mistake.
