Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem: UFC Is Wrong to Let Lesnar Fight Overeem

Donald WoodSep 7, 2011

Former WWE and UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will make his return to the UFC against one of the toughest fighters in the world in Alistair Overeem on December 30 at UFC 141.

That’s a bad move for the UFC.

After suffering through a second battle with diverticulitis, Lesnar says that he is back to his old self again, and ready to march his way back to the top.

"

"One day at a time for me. I believe there's still a bright future in the UFC for me. My health is 100 percent. I feel great. My motivation is there. I want to get on the map again. I want to become the UFC heavyweight champion again. I believe I will do that."

"

While that sounds great on paper, this is a man who hasn’t fought since October of last year when Cain Velasquez best Lesnar down for the UFC Title.

Now the UFC wants the former champion to return to the octagon against one of the toughest human beings in the world.

Former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is a nightmare for his opponents with his size (6’5”, 260 lbs), his amazing athleticism and his extensive background in kickboxing, Muay Tai and submission wrestling, and he is not afraid of what Lesnar has to offer.

UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta told ESPN about Overeem’s desire to fight Lesnar instead of waiting for a title shot:

"

"At the end of the day, he's one of the best in the world. Now we get to see how he matches up against (UFC) guys. We have a tremendous heavyweight division and bringing him along makes it stronger. We wanted him to fight for the heavyweight championship but it didn't work out with that fight happening on Nov. 12. He didn't want to wait around. To his credit, he wants to fight the best. Brock is a huge name guy."

"

If Lesnar expected to come in and roll over his first opponent, he will be sadly mistaken when he meets Overeem in the octagon.

Overeem will beat Brock Lensar and crush the UFC’s hopes of achieving the kind of numbers they were putting up while Lesnar was the heavyweight champion.

Besides Mike Tyson in the 90s and Brock Lesnar in 2010, no one has drawn one million viewers for two pay-per-views in the same calendar year, and the UFC can’t expect the same numbers if their cash cow is getting knocked out.

The UFC should have let Lesnar fight someone who is almost a guaranteed victory so that they could build him up, but instead they gave the fans what they wanted.

I am all about giving the fans what they want, but this is just bad business for the company of UFC because their biggest draw will be knocked out in the ring and knocked out of the MMA lexicon.

It will be a great fight, but Lesnar’s bouts with sickness over the last few years have showed that he is not the specimen that the UFC thought he was, and Overeem will run through Lesnar on his way to winning the UFC Heavyweight belt.

UFC usually makes the right choices in pushing stars, but they got this one all wrong.
