Liverpool's Top 5 Performers vs. Bolton Wanderers in the EPL Game at Anfield

Karl MatchettJun 7, 2018

Liverpool wrapped up a move to the top of the Premier League with a stellar showing and a rampant victory against Bolton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday, after goals from Jordan Henderson, Martin Skrtel and Charlie Adam gave Kenny Dalglish a second win of the season.

Early days it may be yet but Liverpool showed a togetherness and style of play not seen since the late title charge in 2009 which will give fans a great lift heading into the International break on the back of three straight victories, against Arsenal, Exeter City and now Bolton.

A case could feasibly be made for the inclusion of seven or eight players on a Man of the Match list for the Reds after this game, but after some hard decisions, these are my top five performers from the game.

5: Dirk Kuyt

1 of 6

Dirk Kuyt had a magnificent game. Restored to the starting line-up in place of Andy Carroll, he offered his usual bout of work ethic and energy but tied it to some fantastic link up play, smart off-the-ball running and an impressive all-round contribution.

All the Dutchman was missing against Bolton was a goal; one he nearly got when playing a long-distance one-two with Jordan Henderson who crossed from the right—Kuyt was an inch away from applying a finishing touch.

Kenny Dalglish arguably had one call to make for the starting 11 which was to have either Henderson or Kuyt playing.

He ignored that and played them both—and got it absolutely spot on.

4: Jose Enrique

As good a left-back's performance as we have seen from a Liverpool player since John Arne Riise was in his prime and that is no exaggeration.

Jose Enrique was excellent against Bolton; he kept Chris Eagles quiet in his own third of the pitch and was a constant menace in attack, flying past Gretar Steinsson so often and so fast that the Icelandic defender must have been utterly relieved to hear the final whistle.

Stewart Downing played a big part in this performance for the Reds and also in that of Jose Enrique; the two of them linked superbly at times down the left and when the winger came infield Liverpool's new number three was more than willing and emphatically able to take advantage of the big green space left ahead of him.

A superb third performance in a Reds shirt and Jose Enrique is already being spoken about in some quarters as the bargain buy of the season.

3: Jordan Henderson

3 of 6

After three mixed displays in a Reds shirt, Henderson showed just what he is all about against Bolton as he offered a succession of good crosses, intelligent runs and, perhaps most importantly after his early performances, a will to work.

An early goal—well taken—will have boosted his confidence no end, as will his ovation received from the Kop when he was substituted late on.

Henderson delivered several sumptuous crosses from the right flank and performed the role of a ball-playing wide midfielder, rather than a winger, to the letter as he came infield when needed, defended his middle third well and provided an outlet at all times in attack.

Much more a promising display and hopefully a sign of things to come.

2: Lucas Leiva

4 of 6

A virtuoso display from the Brazilian in the heart of the midfield is what set the foundations for victory against Bolton.

In the first half especially, Lucas was absolutely everywhere; he won countless tackles, loose balls, interceptions and even aerial battles as Bolton entirely failed to breach even Liverpool's one-man defensive shield, let alone the defence itself.

His passing was quick, short and to the point but was not unnecessarily defensive or reserved and his presence allowed Charlie Adam the confidence and freedom to start wave after wave of Red attacks.

A brilliant individual performance to set the tone for an even better team one.

1: Luis Suarez

5 of 6

If Premier League defenders and goalkeepers didn't know it after last season's cameo showing, they certainly should by now.

Luis Suarez is a match-winner; on his own or by bringing the best out of his teammates.

Suarez, to be brutally honest, should have added a goal in this game—his casual chip over the advancing Jussi Jaaskelainen was something of a waste—but ignore that minor blip; Luis was a total menace to the Bolton defence and midfield.

He dropped deep, wide, ran off the shoulder of the defence or sat right alongside Kuyt up front; anywhere he got the ball there was an easily-identified expectation in the Anfield air that something was going to happen.

A magnificent outside of the boot cross led to the opening goal, while his endeavour played a part in both the two goals in the second half.

He could have had one penalty and certainly should have won an indirect free-kick inside the area for THAT back-pass, but Suarez's one-man creativity-in-a-box show was a joy to behold for those in Red.

His link up play is more impressive with each passing game and if on occasion he tries to do too much it should only serve to remind that he does it because he can, and that it why we love him.

Suarez was fantastic and is getting closer to full fitness, as evidenced by his withdrawal on around the 78 minute mark instead of his usual 60 so far this season.

He may not have troubled the scoresheet today but Suarez doesn't need to to have so much of an impact, and he fully deserves the Man of the Match accolade today.

Honourable Mentions

As well as Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam also scored his first goal today and was key to most of the Reds' attacking moves, especially in the first half.

Bolton afforded him enough space in midfield that he was able to ping his favoured deep passes behind the full backs and he did so with gusto, along with his usual supply of short passes to either one of Kuyt or Suarez dropping deep from the front line.

Adam was keen to get forward today after the first goal went in and claimed a goal with his right foot and an assist from a corner.

Stewart Downing didn't open his account but almost did with a well-taken volley which eventually led to Henderson's goal, but his all-round game was astonishingly good.

He skinned Steinsson any number of times and used his pace to great effect; all that was missing was a decent right-footed finish after cutting in from the left a few times.

Daniel Agger was also near perfect in defence and offered one of his favoured runs from the back-line, though his shot troubled nobody not sitting lower than row G at least.

Finally, a quick word of praise for Martin Skrtel, often criticised here but who had a fantastic game at right-back after coming on for the injured Kelly. He scored a good goal but his flank play and attitude was spot on and he never let Martin Petrov trouble him once.
