UFC on Versus 5 Results: Questions Answered and Lessons Learned

Matt SaccaroJun 4, 2018

UFC on Versus 5 is finally over, and the fights are in the history books. Fan-favorite Chris Lytle is unfortunately gone but went out on top, and a clearer picture of the lightweight division has emerged due to the victory of Ben Henderson.

The event was an exciting one and not without its importance despite being a free card rather than a pay-per-view.

So what where the questions answered and lessons learned by the events of the night?

Read and find out!

Edwin Figueroa Could Be a Great Prospect but It Isn't a Certainty

1 of 12

Edwin Figueroa managed to batter Jason Reinhardt en route to a second-round TKO victory. While UFC commentator Joe Rogan claimed that Figueroa was a bona fide prospect, it's not yet a certainty.

While Figueroa did look impressive, it was against a fighter who is 40 years old and has lost every time he fought a step up in competition.

Once Figueroa beats a better regarded opponent, he'll deserve the "hot prospect" status.

Referees Still Need Some Work

2 of 12

During one of Jacob Volkmann's many D'Arce choke attempts against Danny Castillo, referee Mario Yamasaki threatened to stand the fight up.

Standing the fight up during a submission attempt is a grievous, shameful error, and it proves that referees in mixed martial arts are still lacking.

Say What You Will About Cole Miller, His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is Still Slick

3 of 12

Lightweight fighter Cole Miller managed to pull off a beautifully executed one-handed guillotine against T.J. O'Brien.

Despite a recent loss to Matt Wiman, Miller's jiu-jitsu is still excellent, and he is still a dangerous competitor in the division.

Jimy Hettes Could One Day Be a Force at Featherweight

4 of 12

Jimy Hettes put on one of the most exciting fights of the night against Alex "Bruce Leeroy" Caceres en route to his second round rear-naked choke victory.

However, like with Edwin Figueroa, more time and more fights are required to tell if Hettes is the real deal.

Still, Hettes did look impressive, and if he builds off of his performance, he could be the future at featherweight since he is skilled and only 24 years old.

Ronny Markes Will Be the Total Package If He Can Just Improve His Striking

5 of 12

Ronny Markes, "an unheralded Brazilian kid" as Joe Rogan put it, managed to dominate six-time Czech Republic wrestling champion Karlos Vemola en route to a unanimous decision victory.

The scary part? Markes is only 23 years old, and he managed to trump the wrestling champion at wrestling.

Markes demonstrated superlative skills in the fight. He is only lacking in his striking abilities.

Should he improve those skills, he will be a dangerous competitor to anyone at light heavyweight.

Ed Herman Is Not To Be Taken Lightly

6 of 12

Ed Herman proved against Kyle Noke that his ground game and his overall fighting ability is not to be underestimated.

Herman's submissions are relentless, quick and painful. Anyone who forgets this fact will likely end up on the wrong end of one of them.

Joe Rogan Is Going To Go "Pee Pee"

7 of 12

If you were paying close attention immediately after the post-fight interview for the Ed Herman fight was over, you could here Joe Rogan say that he was going to "go pee pee."

What does this mean? Nothing in the grand scheme of things aside from the fact that maybe the commentators should make sure their out of range before saying such things.

185 Is Jared Hamman's Weight Class

8 of 12

Not only did Jared Hamman beat accomplished wrestler C.B. Dolloway, he managed to outgrapple him in the second round and earned an eventual TKO victory.

Hamman looked fit, fresh and powerful at middleweight, and he has refined his technique both in striking and in grappling.

Middleweight seems to be Hamman's weight class.

There Are Levels of Striking

9 of 12

While the fact that there are certainly levels of striking isn't a new fact that has been learned, the fight between Duane "Bang" Ludwig and Amir Sadollah helped the MMA community remember it and then some.

Ludwig seemed to always be two moves ahead, and Sadollah just couldn't catch up; Ludwig was far too technical.

Charles Oliveira Was Thrown to the Wolves Too Soon Yet Again

10 of 12

Charles Oliveira is considered one of the top prospects at lightweight but has only a 2-2 (1 NC) record in the UFC to show for it.

Why is his record so average? Because Oliveira is not being given time to develop like a proper prospect.

Instead, he is being thrown to top level competition such as Jim Miller and Donald Cerrone and is being beaten because at 21 years of age, he just isn't experienced enough to beat such skilled fighters.

Oliveira should be kept out of the deep waters of the division for at least two to three more fights.

The WEC Wasn't the Mickey Mouse League

11 of 12

When the UFC merged with the WEC, many felt that the fighters from the WEC were of a lower level. However, that belief should be destroyed after what Ben Henderson did to Jim Miller.

Henderson managed to batter and dominate the oft-touted Miller and earned a unanimous decision victory. Henderson was just simply better in all facets of the game and was more athletic to boot.

His actions proved that the WEC fighters were the real deal and that the WEC was not a minor league in terms of the skill of the fighters.

Entertainment Is More Important Than Results

12 of 12

Despite the fact that Dan Hardy lost his fourth straight fight in the UFC to the now-retired Chris Lytle via submission.

Lorenzo Fertita announced through Twitter saying that he wouldn't cut Hardy because he liked fighters that brought it (he didn't use those words exactly but used twitter dialect which wouldn't make much sense here).

This just demonstrates that the UFC is going in a direction where it cares more about a fighter who loses but is exciting, such as Hardy, rather than a fighter who wins but the fans think is boring, like Jon Fitch.

This is perhaps the most important thing that can be taken away from the event because it will have implications on the future of the sport.
