NBA Trade Talk: Cavaliers, Jazz Could Talk Al Jefferson Deal

Jun 1, 2018

The return of the NFL season has brought a flurry of trades and big free agent signings in just a few days to make up for lost time during the lockout.

When the NBA finally returns, fans should expect much of the same.

One trade that hasn't been talked about but could potentially happen is a deal between the Utah Jazz and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Jazz currently have Paul Mlilsap, Al Jefferson, Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors and Mehmet Okur all competing for minutes at the power forward and center positions with a combined salary of $35 million, or 60 percent of their total team salary for only 40 percent of the roster.

The Cavaliers have a plethora of guards, headlined by Kyrie Irving, Baron Davis, Ramon Sessions, Daniel Gibson, Manny Harris and Christian Eyenga.

While the Jazz are very frontcourt heavy, the Cavaliers depth is in their backcourt.ย  Both teams could benefit from a deal.

One proposed trade that possibly could go down that should would include:

Jazz Get: Ramon Sessions, Alonzo Gee, first-round pick (Kings protected).

Cavaliers Get: Al Jefferson, Future second-round pick.

This trade makes sense for a number of reasons.

First for the Jazz, Sessions provides a playmaker on offense that would find Kanter, Millsap and others for easy looks inside.ย  Gee can play shooting guard or small forward, two positions of need for Utah.

Trading Jefferson removes two years and $29 million from their cap and creates more minutes for rookie Enes Kanter and second year player Derrick Favors to develop.ย  They also get the first-rounder from the Kings in the Omri Casspi trade, lottery protected in 2012.

For the Cavaliers, they get one of the better centers in the game which allows them to bring Anderson Varejao off the bench again.ย  With no centers of Jefferson's quality available in free agency or next seasons draft, they get a true low post option for Kyrie Irving to dish to inside.

This trade would be contingent on the league extending the Cavaliers trade exception, which would help absorb Jefferson's contract.

Only pure speculation at this point, this is a deal both the Jazz and Cavaliers should strongly consider making.
