WWE: 8 Reasons Why Christian's Heavyweight Reign Won't Last Long

Robert AitkenJul 26, 2011

Nine days ago, Christian became World Heavyweight Champion for the second time in his WWE career. Even if that reign began with a kick to the groin, it still meant that Christian was World Heavyweight Champion once again. Already, this is the longest that Christian has held the championship, after his first reign lasted just 48 hours (keep in mind that Smackdown episodes tape on Tuesdays).

Now that Christian gets another chance to be a world champion in WWE, it's time to ponder when he will lose the championship again. Will contenders like Mark Henry and Sheamus move into the spotlight? Will ex-champion Randy Orton cash in on his rematch? Speaking of cashing in, isn't there a briefcase around here somewhere? Here are eight reasons that Christian's days withe the title are already numbered.

1. Randy Orton Gets Rematch

1 of 8

Randy Orton was given a title shot right after Christian won his first world title and put on a great match, winning the title from Christian on the first try. Since then, it has taken a few tries by Christian to try and win it back. Before other superstars get their chances at Christian's title, one would believe that Orton gets the first shot with his automatic rematch clause. Could lightning strike twice and Orton defeat Christian in his first title defense?

2. Sheamus on Warpath

2 of 8

Since the WWE Draft changed both brands around, Sheamus has been very impressive for Smackdown. Despite being the final pick in the Supplemental Draft, Sheamus may end up being the most valuable move in the entire draft. Sheamus fell short of winning the Money in the Bank briefcase, but he has already merited a World Heavyweight Championship match on his own merit. Sheamus has defeated Christian in recent weeks, so the thought of Sheamus possibly having a chance is an understatement. Sheamus has Christian's number until he can prove otherwise.

3. Mark Henry Not Same Superstar

3 of 8

Mark Henry lost to Christian not too far after Henry returned to Smackdown. Since then, Henry has been on a destructive roll through some of the biggest men in WWE, taking out Big Show and Kane in recent weeks. Henry has really turned it up a notch and had some good matches with Randy Orton when Orton was the champion. With Christian back on top, expect Mark Henry hot in pursuit of the World Heavyweight Championship.

4. Triple H Calls Shots

4 of 8

Friday night on Smackdown is being billed as the first Smackdown under the direction of Triple H as COO of WWE. I'm sure that the 13-time world champion will have something to say about the World Heavyweight Championship, especially after making a second world title match on RAW this week. Triple H still holds the record for most total days holding that belt, so you know that Triple H has a special place in his heart for that title.

5. Bryan Has the Briefcase

5 of 8

Sure, Daniel Bryan said that he would wait until WrestleMania to cash in his world title opportunity. However, even Bryan can see a great opportunity when it presents itself. Christian has three destructive men nipping at his heels for that championship. Who is to say that Bryan wouldn't cash in at SummerSlam, where he made his return to WWE a year ago, to become World Heavyweight Champion?

6. Is Christian Ready for Major PPV?

6 of 8

Speaking of SummerSlam, it is one of the four major pay-per-views in WWE all year and is probably the second most important behind WrestleMania. With such a major pay-per-view on the horizon, is Christian as a world champion a massive selling point for the card? One of the arguments against Christian when he was not a world champion was that he couldn't draw money and generate buzz as champion. The next few weeks are the true test of that and SummerSlam may make or break Christian's reign, as well as any future reigns for him.

7. Champion Christian Not Very Impressive

7 of 8

Last week's match against Intercontinental Champion Ezekiel Jackson showed an unimpressive world champion defeat the stronger and fresher (didn't have a match at Money in the Bank) Ezekiel Jackson. Jackson probably could have normally whipped off a bunch of slams and put Christian in a torture rack. Instead, Christian squeezed out victory over a guy that may just be in the top ten contenders. Just image that same effort against one of the top challengers.

8. World Heavyweight Title Seldom Stays Put

8 of 8

The World Heavyweight Championship likes to travel around and make its way through locker rooms. Since 2002, Christian has been the 20th different world heavyweight champion. Meanwhile the WWE Championship, in existence since 1963, welcomed their 42nd different champion Monday night in Rey Mysterio.

In fact, the last ten reigns, beginning with Chris Jericho's win at Elimination Chamber last year, each championship lasts on average roughly seven weeks. The end of the next seven weeks will be first Sunday in September, just two weeks away from Night of Champions.

Basically, if Christian is still the title holder after Night of Champions, WWE is trying hard to make it work with him as the world champion.
