Houston Astros: Jordan Lyles Can't Catch a Break

Blaine SinclairJun 7, 2018

Jordan Lyles is the Astros' youngest arm and is widely considered to be an integral part of the rebuilding process that will happen over the next few years.

He has recently tied a club record: his first ten major league starts have come and gone without a win.

Although his first major league win has become increasingly elusive, Jordan has shown poise well beyond his years.

Lyles posts a 4.55 ERA in 61.1 innings pitched with 46 strikeouts.  He has recorded four quality starts in ten chances.  While some stats look good, the win-loss column does not.  He is 0-5, and the Astros are 1-9 in games tossed by the 20-year-old.  The lone win came in his debut, in which Jordan pitched seven innings and allowed only two runs to the Chicago Cubs before receiving a no decision.

It has become clear in his last few starts that the team is really working hard to earn him his first win.  Brad Mills is utilizing all of his moves to try to position the youngster with a chance to be a winner.  Mills allowed Lyles to start the ninth inning in a start on July 18 against the Washington Nationals, hoping for offensive production in their half inning to nab that win.  It backfired and cost him another notch in the loss department.

Despite all the uncertainty surrounding the trade deadline, Lyles and the Astros organization are working hard to see that one of their pieces that will be around past July 31 is rewarded for gritty performances.

But, how long will we have to wait?
