Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Gunners to Sign Costa Rica's Joel Campbell
Costa Rican publication Al Dia reports that Arsenal is in talks to sign 19-year-old striker Joel Campbell.
Campbell started all three of Costa Rica's group games in this year's Copa America, scoring in a 2-0 defeat of Bolivia and putting in good performances against top nations like Colombia and Argentina.
The Deportivo Saprissa striker has also reportedly attracted the interest of other top European clubs such as Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus. It is reported, however, that Arsenal club official Richard Law has already arrived in Costa Rica to finalize a deal.
Campbell, who is believed to have a £5 million price tag, commented on speculation of a transfer saying, “I have to handle things calmly and wait for the opportunity. Who would not want to play for Arsenal? That’s what I work for but as yet nothing is clear. I am calm: I leave everything in God’s hands.”
Campbell also participated in the CONCACAF Gold Cup this year, netting once, and finished as the top scorer at the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championship, totaling six goals as his nation finished as the runner-up.
Joel Campbell is most noted for his good dribbling skills, blistering pace and creativity on the ball. He has even drawn comparisons to Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o, but when commenting on his own playing style he mentioned,“I’m clever, fast and good on the ball, though I think I’m at my best in one-on-one situations. Ronaldo has always been my idol and role model but I don’t think I’m like him, Eto’o or anyone. I try to take the things they’re each good at and learn from them. I watch what they do in the pitch and try to put it into practice.”
While it appears Arsenal is wrapping up a deal for the young forward, he is not yet eligible for a work permit and will be taking part in this year's FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will run from July 29 until Aug. 20.
