ESPN ESPYs Awards Video: Watch Seth Meyers' Opening Monologue on ESPN Award Show

Adam WellsJul 14, 2011

The 2011 ESPY Awards are in the books. Seth Meyers returned as host for the second consecutive year, and his opening monologue featured jabs at everything from the NFL and NBA lockouts to the Vancouver Riots to Kim Kardashian.

Let's be honest, the awards themselves are secondary to any comedy or controversy that may come out of the show. Since there wasn't any real controversy to speak of, unless you count Justin Bieber being allowed in the building (and you know you do), so that left us with the comedy.

Meyers' performance on the ESPYs reminded me of his performance on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update: It featured a couple of high points, some really bad lowpoints and a lot of stuff in between. He didn't kill any one joke, but he did have a couple of good laugh out loud moments.

The best joke that the SNL star delivered was about Kim Kardashian and her upcoming wedding to NBA player Kris Humphries.

"In other NBA news, Kim Kardashian is getting married to New Jersey Net Kris Humphries," Meyers said. "Asked why she picked a New Jersey Net, Kim said that she was tired of dating pro athletes."

The second best zinger that he told was about Brian Cardinal looking like a crazed fan.

The low point, for me at least, was when Meyers tried to make a Michael Vick joke about receiving MVP votes from a bunch of cats.

In the immortal words of Mr. Meyers and Amy Poehler, "Really, Seth? REALLY?"

It won't go down in the annals of time as the worst ESPY monologue ever, but it is far from one of the best.

Here's hoping that ESPN can change things up a bit next year and get someone else in there who can deliver an epic monologue. My choice would be reuniting former employees Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann. Just let those two riff on anything and everything they want to for 15 minutes.

That, my friends, is Must-See TV.
