WWE News, Punk out (Day 49): Punk, McMahon and Cena Square off in Negotiations
Big Nasty will be keeping a running diary of what appear to be CM Punk's final days in WWE (for now). Reports of Punk's reticence to sign a contract extension seem to point to the fact that he is gearing up to leave the company.
The pulse of the entire wrestling world beats violently in Boston tonight, and it will continue to right into Sunday at WWE Money in the Bank where WWE in 2011 will likely peak on the strength of the most compelling angle of the year.
CM Punk's continued (legit) contract negotiations, have intensified, with Vince McMahon reportedly getting in on the groveling as top officials try desperately to avert having yet another top star leave the WWE.
At last word Punk is still leaving the company. In response to a gay slur uttered by Punk at a recent show in Australia, WWE went as far as to tell gay civil rights super group GLAAD that Punk is legitimately leaving the WWE after Money in the Bank, and that his departure is not part of a storyline.
The fact that the WWE is reportedly still trying to re-sign CM Punk just goes to show that WWE is willing to hide behind anything to placate their precious PR relationships. Even their own storylines.
Punk's rebellious ways seem to have both intentionally and unintentionally transcended WWE's product into the coveted mainstream spotlight. National radio personalities Colin Cowherd and Jim Rome both praised Punk's work, with both going as far to insinuate that certain aspects of it were real.
With WWE riding a profitable heat wave of momentum, a much anticipated RAW at the Boston Garden is expected to deliver ratings as well as the final sales pitch for one of the most talked about non-WrestleMania WWE pay-per-views in quite some time.
BOSTON, Mass. - July 11. CM Punk interrupted the WWE's signature open armed with a mustache and a mega phone (probably in case they turn off his microphone).
Punk, who received a mixed reaction from the Boston crowd, reminds the live crowd that he was suspended by Vince McMahon.
Punk reiterated his sentiments of leaving the WWE with the WWE Championship, and once again referred to Stephanie McMahon as the idiotic daughter, with Triple H still being a doofus son in law.
Punk said he has the balls to say things that nobody else would dare say, and that WWE is filled with shameless ass kissers. Punk said that he brought a megaphone just in case they cut his microphone off, and the crowd quickly warmed up to the former ROH Champion as "CM Punk" chants reverberate through the garden.
He said when he has a microphone in hand it is not a microphone, but rather a pipe bomb as evidenced by his promo two weeks ago. Punk said, quite poignantly, the only time anybody wants to talk about pro wrestling in the main stream circuit is if they want to talk about CM Punk or if somebody dies. Punk went on to boast about all the media outlets and talk shows (yes, Jimmy Kimmel too) who wanted him to make an appearance to tell his story.
Punk offered a proposition to have the fist ever live contract negotiation with Vince McMahon, who he said has been desperately trying to re-sign him. CM Punk suggests that Vince McMahon join the CM Punk "Kiss My Ass" Club if he wants Punk to consider staying.
With that, John Cena interrupted all while CM Punk talked over his music via megaphone.
Cena said he wanted CM Punk to continue his rant. Punk replied by saying he will beat Cena for the WWE Championship, and when he does, he will change what it looks like because it's been far too ugly for too long. He said not to worry about being fired because the last time he was "fired" it lasted an entire seven days.
Cena congratulated Punk for thinking he is the best wrestler in the world. He then reminded Punk of all the wrestlers, from Triple H to John Layfield, who thought they were the best wrestlers in the world and thought that "the kid" couldn't hang with them. He said how he proved them all wrong, and come Sunday he's coming to Chicago to kick CM Punk's ass.
Fantastic segment thus far.
The anonymous RAW GM chimed in, and told Cena that he has a match scheduled next.
Cena defeated the WWE Tag Team Champions Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga in a match designed to show that he is ready for the biggest match of the year in WWE to date.
WWE spent the remainder of the show building towards the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, with the focus being on CM Punk's live contract negotiation with Vince McMahon.
After WWE returned from its final commercial break, Vince McMahon's music hit as McMahon entered and re-entered multiple times to increasingly louder ovations.
After the prolonged fanfare, McMahon assured the WWE Universe that he will not be joining the CM Punk Kiss My Ass Club. He then called out Punk.
McMahon calmly asked Punk to sign the contract extension, which includes a clause that will give him his own collector's cup.
Punk slowly paced around the ring and said he's surprised that McMahon isn't wearing one of John Cena's ridiculous red t-shirts and arm bands given the fact that he's 'such a John Cena guy'.
McMahon addressed CM Punk by his real name of "Phil", and said that he wouldn't be able to live with himself if CM Punk left Chicago with the WWE Championship.
Punk then answered by saying that he had his lawyers draw up a new contract. Punk's perks per the new contract included his likeness being included on the turnbuckles, titantron and cups. Punk said he wants WWE to bring back the WWE ice cream bars, which elicited the loudest and longest pop of the night.
He said he knows the Rock and Cena will face off at WrestleMania 28, but he wants his match to be the main event.
He then revisited his anti-bullying campaign remarks, calling McMahon the biggest bully he has ever met. He said McMahon does not know how to make a star in 2011, and has fired his close personal friends including Luke Gallows and Colt Cabana. Punk said he is the voice of the voiceless who will say what the career deceased are not able to say in the WWE.
Punk was working the crowd up into a frenzy, who at one point chanted "We want wrestling". Punk called McMahon a hypocrite and eventually bullied Vince into giving him an apology.
Punk continuously insisted that McMahon apologize to him. With "Colt Cabana" and more "We want wrestling" chants continuing to fill the arena, John Cena's music hits and he set foot into the hot segment. Referring to CM Punk as a terrorist, Cena called CM Punk a hypocrite due to the fact that he wants to leave despite claiming to be the voice of the voiceless.
Going into a typical, yet impassioned, Cena tirade, Cena said he hated McMahon just as much as Punk, yet he shows up to work every day because the fans paid good money to come to the show.
Cena took the obligatory shot at the Rock, who infamously said he would never leave the WWE Universe again.
After Cena says that Punk has lost sight of everything, Punk furiously interrupts and says that it is Cena who had lost sight of everything. He talked about the wrestlers who Cena previously mentioned, who thought that Cena couldn't hang with them and brilliantly concludes that it is now Cena who had become the guy who feels Punk cannot hang with him.
Punk said he once rode on the side of Cena's car at WrestleMania 22, and he made a promise to himself that he would one day be inside the ring. He said that it has now come full circle as they are in Cena's hometown of Boston en route to Punk's hometown of Chicago, Illinois for his last match.
With the Boston crowd hanging his on every word, Punk likened Cena to the illustrious quartet of Boston sports franchises (Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins) who all paraded around as the underdog only to become dynasties in their own right. Punk then said Cena had become the New York Yankees, and Cena responded by punching CM Punk.
Punk retreated from the ring as Cena's music played. After ordering the music to be shut off, Punk sat down on the stage and said that the WWE Universe should say goodbye to the WWE Championship, goodbye to John Cena, and goodbye to CM Punk because he is not re-signing with the company.
On a talk-heavy, go-home edition of Monday Night RAW, the hottest storyline in professional wrestling only got hotter through equally proficient mic work from John Cena and CM Punk. One more date for CM Punk at a white hot Money in the Bank pay-per-view will almost certainly make the next, and final, entry the best.
