Los Angeles Angels Promote Top Prospect Mike Trout to Majors
According to ESPN, in a surprising turn of events, the Los Angeles Angels have promoted Mike Trout to the majors—the No. 2 overall prospect in the game according to Baseball America.
Trout was playing for the Angels Double-A affiliate in Arkansas before the promotion. He is being called up to replace the current Angels center fielder, Peter Bourjos who had strained his right hamstring and is expected to be out until at least the All-Star break.
So far this season, Trout has been outstanding in the minors. At just age 19, he has managed to beat up on older competition.
In 75 games at Double-A, Trout put up a .338/.423/.503 line. He also hit nine home runs and had 11 triples while driving in 27. The speedster managed to steal 28 bases while getting caught eight times this year.
Trout was also playing well defensively. He has made just one error on the year and has a .994 fielding percentage.
It should be interesting to see how Trout fares during his stint in the majors. He has never had trouble against older competition, but the pitchers at Single-A and Double-A are nothing compared to major leaguers.
If Trout plays well, there is a chance that the Angels could keep him around for a while. They are currently right in the middle of the playoff hunt and if Trout is able to prove that he is the game-changer that he is expected to be, it would be hard for the Angels not to keep him around.
