The White Sox are looking to fill vacancy at second base and/or at third base from departures of Joe Crede and Orlando Cabrera will both are free agents.
The Mets have Luis Castillo (2B) and they have Daniel Murphy (INF) who can play third base. As much speculation as it is than fact, it would not be impossible to see Minaya try to get involved to trade talks for Vazquez who has a history with the righthander. In December of 2003, Minaya traded Javier Vazquez to the Yankees for 1B Nick Johnson, OF Juan Rivera and LHP Randy Choate. Of course we all know how that went for the Yankees, but he has matured since then and become a better pitcher.
Vazquez, has two years and $23 million left on his contract, while Castillo has $18 Million for next 3 yrs. Vazquez will be 33 yrs old next year. The Mets would have to be willing to add other parts to the deal and eat most of the contract as well..
In 2007 Vasquez was the team ace going 15-8, 3.74 ERA, But slid off track in 2008 going 12-16, 4.67 ERA....
Here are his numbers for the last 3 years:
|Last 3 years||Team||G||GS||W||L||SV||CG||SHO||IP||H||R||ER||HR||BB||K||ERA||WHIP||BAA|
In the last three years Vazquez has pitched over 200 innings and struck out 180 more batters in each year. He might benefit from the National League with the pitchers hitting 9th... I would definitely take a shot if Omar had the chance to make a deal... The Mets need innings eaters to take the pressure off the bullpen..
The real candidates the Sox are interested in are Angels' 3B Chone Figgins, Orioles' 2B Brian Roberts, and free agent 2B Orlando Hudson..
